I'm sorry but I highly doubt a terrorist doing some research work would be wearing muslim clothing and just holding out a counter, that's just way too obvious, that's like setting off an alarm on purpose.. Wouldn't it make more sense to just to blend in with normal clothes and click the counter inside your pocket...This guy was most likely either crazy or just doing something else.
Better be safe and piss off one guy than feel intense regret if something happened. You did the right thing

Uh, there are always people using counters in the stations, especially 42nd St. They usually work for the MTA. Of course, they are usually wearing orange vests. The guy was also a moron not to identify himself to you if he was a legitimate worker.

he could have very well been praying you know.. they have to do it at certain times a day and they arnt gonna let someone stop them.

Maybe he wanted everyone to think he was crazy because it was so obivious?
Better to get him checked out and find out he's a nutcase than have him slip

I talked about that possibility with a co-worker of mine ... but the frequency of his clicks was way too rapid to be counting prayers. It may not have been timing ... it may have been people, honestly I don't know. What I do know is that he was counting something, and that he wasn't happy when I confronted him. The best description I have for his reaction was that he "shut down" and refused to respond in any way.
Right ... wrong ... I don't know, but I did what I felt was right, and I can live with that. If somebody saw me doing something suspicious, and I was innocent, I'd have no problem explaining myself or my actions (no matter how bizarre). This guy didn't want to do that ... not that he was obligated to do so, but he had the opportunity, and he chose not to.
