As the title says, got a week in Manhattan coming up for work and I'll likely be bored after work. Please suggest some must-visit food establishments (any cuisine) and hopefully some cool record shops. I am planning on revisiting St. Marks Place as I didn't get enough time last time I was in town there. Fatty 'cues is on my list right now and most likely another momofuku visit.

If anyone knows of a place I might be able to score some records, specifically old hip-hop or metal stuff, lay that out too.

If any of you all want to get a drink (and aren't creeps :awe:), PM me.

Go over to the east side(West 4th) area and listen to some live bands and drinks. Washington Square park is know for people playing music out in the open

interesting, thanks for the tip.

this might be a stretch but are there any open jam type situations where you don't need to have your own gear? I would love to sit in on guitar somewhere for the night since I get anxious when I cant play every day.

I don't remember the names/locations, but the little mom & pop places around Manhattan were great

Carnegie Deli: very very touristy but tasty pastrami
Chicken and Rice on 53rd and 6th: This is a really specific vendor cart that makes it differently than most of the other halal carts. I love it, you should try it at least once
Havelli: Great indian food place, free ice cream dessert for 1st time visitors
Shanghai Cafe: Great Chinese food, get the Xiao Long Bao there
ShakeShack: great burgers but be prepared for a ridiculous wait

I would go by Yelp to help you find some other places. The population density makes it so that the good restaurants always have a crap load of reviews.

I live in the east village, a block from St. Mark's ... welcome!

Ok, food destinations - what's your budget?

All the following are cheap/cheap-ish but excellent places to eat in or around the east village:

$4 slice of Artichoke pizza on 14th st. b/w 1st & 2nd ave ... insanely good!
$14 lobster roll from Luke's on 7th st b/w 1st & Ave. A ... voted #2nd best in nyc, best in manhattan
McSorley's ... oldest irish pub in nyc, only 2 types of beer! so full of history, google it. 7th st b/w 2nd & 3rd ave.
Veniero's also oldest italian pastry shop in nyc & their cannolis are to die for 11th st b/w 1st &2nd ave
u already mention momofuku ...
O'Taisho for awesome japanese street food

elsewhere in manhattan, cheap good food:

les halles - bourdain's old place, really good food and very affordable, 28/29 & park
katz deli - freakin world famous, massive awesome sandwiches n stuff, houston & ludlow in the LES
shake shack - really good hot dogs, in madison sq pk.

as mentioned, washington sq. park is a really cool place to hang out. same for union sq.

for lunch, eat at a gourmet food cart. go to midtownlunch.com and there's a ton listed there. my fav. is the indian food cart on 18th & park - incredibly good biryani

lemme know what u lookin for :)

went to nyc for the first time in april, bleecker street records is decent and has some interesting stuff. theres another one nearby, i dont remember the name, a very narrow shop that was all vinyl....loads of old stuff. pricey, but you would very likely find something interesting there. sorry i dont remember the name :-/

Do you like katz better than carnegie deli? I've been to CD twice but never been to Katz yet.

Thanks to Mo0o and you for the lists. Assume no budget really.. if the food is worth it. I've been to katz before, pretty good.

I am a big fan of all Asian cuisines, good steaks and fish, 'foodie' type places with interesting twists on food. I am allergic to tomatoes so that kind of fucks pizza and italian food.

if you like steak, people say go to peter luger's in williamsburg. however, i actually preferred the steaks at sparks.

funayama (9th st/greenwich ave) is a decent sushi place in the village that has all you can eat (pieces/rolls/hand rolls) on mondays and thursdays for about $25. the all you can eat menu is smaller than the regular a la carte menu but it still has plenty enough and all of the regular pieces (tuna, salmon, hamachi, fatty tuna, salmon roe, flying fish roe, etc.). there's also ruby foo's in times square for japanese fusion type stuff. it's more expensive but their drinks are yum.

for italian, you should go to little italy but i can't remember the names of any of the places we used to frequent. for dessert, though, you can head over to ferrara.

for chinese, i have the same problem remembering where i used to go to but if you like peking duck you can go to peking duck house. or if you're around on a sunday you can go to the huge dim sum at this place i can't remember the name of something like silver palace or something. it's on bowery just before canal, across from the manhattan bridge, and right above popeye's. then you can walk to the chinatown ice cream factory. there's also lucky cheng's featuring the best transvestite waiters (or do i call them waitresses?) i've ever seen.

for indian, it's hard to go wrong with the restaurants in the little india area (6th st or something between 2nd and 1st i think).

what area will you be in? what is your budget? when are you going to be in town?

i remember there used to be a bunch of record shops several years ago on 6th ave in the low single digit numbers or perhaps south of that in the bleeker st area. sorry i can't remember more detail but it's a nice enough area to walk around in anyway.

if you're into guitar, you might enjoy the les paul monday show at the iridium. i went once when he was still around and it was awesome. these days i think they just feature really good guitarists and jazz groups.

Thanks, I'll be there starting this Sunday until next Saturday. I'll be in the meat packing district but I'm quite familiar with this area already and want to try something different. I'll definitely check out the Iridium thing, that sounds awesome.

if budget is not an issue I would go to le bernadin. That shit is good. It's not the best value but its the best seafood ive had.

Peter Luger in brooklyn (?) is famous for steak as well

I went to Morimoto manhattan and had their omikase. Really delicious but really expensive.

http://www.takesushi.com/MAIN.html Had really good sushi at reasonable prices.

The thing bout Peter Lugers is that the steak will be like $100 and they only accept cash. :hmm:

But you'll love the steak though. :p

there's a spanish restaurant we like near the meat packing district called el faro. i think i usually get the shrimp in green sauce. the decor is just meh but the food is good.

my friends like this place called Revel in the meat packing district too.

If budget is NOT a concern AND you're looking for an out-of-body experience - drop everything and go to Masa.

How do I put this ... before I went there, I thought my boss was R E T A R D E D to taking 2 clients & me to place that approx $400+ per person not including drinks.

It was so ridiculously good - it will be the last thing on my mind before I die.

If you're into asian cuisine, St. Mark's is awesome ... lots there

Hagi is a sake bar that's a lot of fun @ 49 b/w 7 & 6.
Sushi Samba, the one I go to is on Park b/w 19 & 20 ... is ... WOW ... fusion of brazilian & japanese
Japoniase on 18th b/w Park & Irving is also top notch
Also, try out Tamarind on 23rd & Park fusion Indian food and Uma Thurman's hangout to boot.
