I just wanted to express my state of dispair over the current state of the graphics market.

We have nothing to talk about in here other than 'future products' by ATI, and perhaps issues with some of the newer nVidia cards.

There are no more discussions or flamewars over which company has the fastest card. It is so lopsided that not even the most fervent fanboy can remotely convince *anyone* that the X1950XTX is the fastest card out there. 😛

Your post title says it all.
Nvidia will soon be the Micro Shaft of video card industry if AMD decides to fold under.
As much as I like Nvidia gpu but the competition keeps the prices down.

Is AMD really thinking about folding? Why on earth would they buy ATI only to go under? ATI was my favorite Canadian company. 🙁
 
The worst part is some people seem to be happy about it, just for the sake of being a fanboy.

This is terrible for PC gaming 🙁

$600 high end cards to get a decent frame rate, no thanks!

Soon it will be *NEW* nvidia g100! only $1200. But wait you need SLI too!!!!!!

Methinks im getting out of this and buying a 360.

I couldnt be happier since I got my 360. It saves a lot of money. No upgrading every six months.
 
Yeah, it is kinda boring with Intel and Nvidia in the lead and by large enough margins that it's not debatable. Things need to get interesting again.
 
Well, I dont disagree with the OP, however, I do think that nvidia is smart enough to realize that being the only manufacturer of discreet GPUs would hurt sales! If they have cards that are over $1000 a pop, I think most people, and much to my shagrin me, would switch over to console gaming. I doubt anyone in the PC gaming industry would want to see that happen.

IIRC, The Xbox 360 uses an ATI video solution. The PS3 uses nvidia. So as long as the 360 is in its production life, ATI should be fine. Until Sony can drop the manufacturing costs and ultimately the retail cost of their PS3, the average consumer will probably look towards the 360 and most obviously the Wii for console entertainment. But the good news for ATI is that they are so far ahead in the 360's life that as soon as Sony w/Nvidia can drop the price, MS can drop the price on the 360.

Id like to believe that a scenario like that could buy ATi enough time to get thie sh!t together and get the r600 based cards out. I must admit I prefer nvidia graphics, but Im all for a competitive market! I dont even want to think about $1000 for a graphics card!
 
That's why you find a game that you love playing and works great with what you have. If you can't find this, perhaps the hardware manufacturers aren't the only ones to blame.
 
Well, even if this IS AMD/ATI's last hurrah in uberhighend discrete graphics GPU's (Not saying it is, but that thought keeps scratching at the back of my mind), Intel will do something. They bought up at least one company specializing in graphics architecture, and hired a shedload of engineers from another company(s). Larrabee, will be very interesting to say the least. Not a clue on how it would perform, but here is hoping.

Hell, I'm even contemplating buying an ATI board to support the bastages. And I don't even need a new card right now, LOL. All for the cause. ATI just can't go quietly into the night. They need to stay for the sake of all us consumers and our wallets. I can't stomach spending over 400 bucks for a vid card. That is my max every few years, and that's usually a second place card (not uber high end, but just under). No way in blazes I'm paying a grand for it. That is a whole helluva lot 'o broccoli.

Well if you're getting xbox, I must get playstation3. Sight unseen I am sure it is better. 😀

Actually I agree, the pc game market seems to be dying - in the sense that all we seem to get are games ported from consoles anyways. I also am tempted to go that route.

 
Did nVidia improve their picture quality? I haven't had nvidia card since ti4200. Needless to say colors were pretty washed out compared to how vibrant ATI picture is. Right now I'm running x850 and so far it does the job fairly well for the games that I play but pretty soon I'm going to have to upgrade again. ATI drivers got really good, I haven't had a problem in what seems years, and I remember with Nvidia drivers I would always have to save my old driver because frequently after the driver update something would go wrong in one of my games. I'm far from a fanboy, I just go with what suits me best at the time. Right now my rig is AMD/ATI, but in future it looks like I'm going to have to go with Intel/nVidia if prcie/performance ratio is alright.

I don't think ATI ever did "know how" BUT Diamond did.. you can only recyle that sh1t so many times before father time and nv catches up to you. Then what? March, May..someday..

Same! Instead of spending money upgrading my PC, I spend that money to actually buy and play games on the 360. Waaaay more fun than waiting for drivers 🙂

Too late... Both side are loosing the war. NVIDIA push ever deeper in ATI territory (market share) and Intel lay siege to AMD on eastern front hopping to find breakthrough and retake the lost territory (lost market). AMD suffering heaving looses but still holding the front at cost (using all its money for the bloody price war). ATI has crumbled under the NVIDIA?s pressure cased by the lethal weapon of propaganda (excellent marketing) and it is looking at total defeat by 2008 in high end arena (enthuastic market). Loyal ATI troops are starting to loose faith in the company they so admired once. They leave to either surrender to nvidia or join willing to fight against the company they once admired.

yes they have

Geforce 8800 is now the top of the pile when it comes to IQ as well as speed.
they have angle independant (thats right isnt it?) Anisotropic filtering enabled as standard fair for the 8800 and its at least on par if not better than ATi's HQAF with the R580 which you have to enable yourself. the HQ mode in the nvidia drivers only makes it better.
