nVidia is Coke and Nike, ATI is Pepsi and Reebok...

Do you ever do this? Associate companies becuase of their financial status, etc? Like they're on a team or something.

Favorites: nVidia, Intel, Coke, Ford (not sure about that one), Nike, and McDonalds

Underdog: ATI, AMD, Pepsi, Chevrolet, Reebok, and Burger King

I dunno. Maybe my mind just visualizes things strangely and none of you will know what I'm talking about.

I need more to do at work.

EDIT: Added Intel and AMD.

Pepsi an underdog???

GM is larger than ford, a LOT larger...

Nike/Reebok both suck.

True, but GM's financials are down the crapper. Can you say junk bonds? 😉

Ford is in as much trouble as GM... but lets not go into that.

Pretty cool. If I were to do the same with those company I probably group them in the same way.

As are Ford's... as is the entire domestic car industry.

How is Pepsi an "underdog"??? Pepsi is much better than Coke.

the OP is not referring to your preference. he's talking about market share and yes, Coke does still have larger market share than pepsi.

nike has like 40% market share, I think reebok and adidas had 10% each roughly, nike is still significantly larger

for ati/ nvidia are we talking discrete solutions, it should be more intel vs ati and nvidia

Added Intel and AMD to the list. Dunno how I missed that.

Apparently some folks aren't quite as "left field" in their thinking. Heh.

I see what you mean. The "favorites" are kind of like the beginners, pioneers, in their fields, and they just have the biggest market share because they were the first to market, but the underdogs think: oh yea, this looks like money, let's make a competitor to the favorites, and cash in on the craze.

Is that what you mean?

Also, what would be interesting to consider is that the favorites usually don't touch their formulas and think that they can continue winning their market share without touching anything, because that is how they got it initially. But the underdogs on the other hand, they may have seen the imperfections of the favorites, and think that there is something to better, and they do better it, but they better it so much that only a couple of people see it. Kind of like Mercedes-Benz and BMW. M.B. has usually been first to market with a couple of things, and then BMW comes by and markets that thing a little bit better because of their launch dates (e.g.: S-Class runs for four years, and so does the 7 series, but after the S-class is introduced, a year after the 7 series comes out, because of their cycles)

Confusing?

No, what you say makes lots of sense, that's kind of what I was thinking. It just seemed like an interesting sociological topic. The Mercedes vs. BMW comparision hit the nail on the head.

I like:
nVidia - favourite
AMD - underdog
Pepsi - underdog
Chevrolet - underdog
Nike and Reebok - favourite and underdog
Mickey D's, Burgerking, KFC, Wendy's - favourite and underdog.

Happy?

ATi is a FAR larger company than nVidia.

What do you base this on? I'm not saying you're wrong, I'd just like to know why this is true. I was under the impression that nVidia was bigger.
