Why is it that people put so much pressure on the 3DMark scores? I really love it when someone mentions their system can do XXX 3DMark scores. None of this really matters to me, the ingame scores, of games I play, are the ones that matter. Sure, ATI may be faster in 3DMark, but if they aren't as fast in XXX game, then why do I care?

Sure, the arguement for 3DMark is the "future" of games and gaming, but when it comes to NOW, I look at performance NOW. As it sits, I read UT2K3 (and Quake-based) benches far more than anything 3DMark has ever done.

3DMark is useful to me primarly to stress-test overclocks and to make sure a system isn't underperforming compared to some expected level. That's it. I don't memorize my score and make posts about it or other wastes of time, again unless there's something wrong with performance.

I get excited about games not benches.

as i said in the other thread. we cant trust nvidia becuase of 3dmark cheating, we cant trust ati becuase of quake3 cheating, the only company we can trust is...... Cirrus Logic!, they have never cheated us at the benchmarks.

The HardOCP article on the subject was interesting , they did say,

am pretty sure you will see many uninformed sites jumping on the news reporting bandwagon today with "NVIDIA Cheating" headlines. Give me a moment to hit this from a different angle.

First off it is heavily rumored that Extremetech is very upset with NVIDIA at the moment as they were excluded from the DOOM3 benchmarks on Monday and that a bit of angst might have precipitated the article at ET, as I was told about their research a while ago. They have made this statement:

We believe nVidia may be unfairly reducing the benchmark workload to increase its score on 3DMark2003. nVidia, as we've stated above, is attributing what we found to a bug in their driver.

Finding a driver bug is one thing, but concluding motive is another.

Conversely, our own Brent Justice found a NVIDIA driver bug last week using our UT2K3 benchmark that slanted the scores heavily towards ATI. Are we to conclude that NVIDIA was unfairly increasing the workload to decrease its UT2K3 score? I have a feeling that Et has some motives of their own that might make a good story.

The intersting thing is that 3DMark looks good on Nvidia cards, while running normal benchmark mode. They fixed the fp precision recently, so it looks as good as the others.

Before labeling this as a fact consider this: Nvidia quit beta program back in December, so they did not have access to developer version - and therefore could not test the manual flyby.

And by itself, 3DMark is useless for anything but testing your own machine for stability, as results can be inflated by tweaking settings freely available in the display menu and registry. And no developer in the right mind will use their ultra slow, proprietary stencil engine.
