Obvious fanboy defense mechanism is obvious.

I've never heard of a faulty card causing problems such as the inability to put the monitor in standby, or 2d video acceleration crashing drivers. Admittedly I only had those two particular problems with 10.4 cat's. The card runs fine in 3d stress tests.

Lets not forget AMD/ATis Dx11 part has been out for 7 months? now and as more and more people buy one and put it into their systems, there are bound to be things that the products couldnt have been troublechecked for at the labs etc. Drivers can only do so much, unless a problem is made known, it is just that, a problem.

I think the OP is genuine in asking for help. In HIS setup, he is getting these issues. also, coming to forums like this IS a step in troubleshooting for most of us 😀

suggestions would be to completely clean away your drivers etc, new install and try it again.
It could be a faulty card Quantom?
 
I've had more problems with Nvidia drivers than ATI. Nvidia's ever long driver crash in Windows lasted forever and would suck when it crashed during a good game. My ATI driver hasn't crashed during a game.
 
I have had my 4890 overclocked running Milkyway@Home every day as well as using it for gaming. I have not experienced none of the issues you have described. However, when I pushed it too far, it would BSOD all day. The issue is either a faulty card, some issue with driver installation (i.e., didn't clean your NV drivers before you installed the card), or insufficient voltage at 2D settings, perhaps a poor PSU/connection.

As far as monitor power saving mode, I can tell you that it doesn't work for either 8800GT or 4890 I have on my Westy 37 inch or my friend's Sharp 32 inch using a DVI connection. This feature only worked for me on those cards using an VGA connection. So it's a common issue with NV/ATI.

Some ATI cards are unable to run when aggressively downclocked and downvolted in 2D while running flawlessly under load. There's a reason that card is at ambient temp and sipping nearly no power at idle and that reason is not magic.

In which case, yes, that's a hardware fault causing the exact symptoms you describe.

I've never had a problem with CCC, stop making it sound like every person with an ATI card has CCC problems GenX87.
 
I love the way this thread is phrased. Is it meant to be flame bait? Couldn't it have simply been entitled, "I can't get my ati drivers to work properly!"
 
Not a single one of your issues should be occurring.

I have an HD5870 & experience NONE of the issues you mentioned.

I'd guess you have a defective card, or massively messed up OS/drivers.

I already concluded on page one, that he must be a newspaper editor. And there is nothing wrong with being a newspaper editor, i just mention it because of the title 😀
 
I use both Nvidia and ATI and have never had a problem????

OP drop the hunk of junk and get an Nvidia and we will have less posts about how A sucks less than B.

Have to say both make good cards sure you can get a lemon but work it out and don't come spreading doom because you got one bad card.
 
Either you have remnants of Nvidia drivers causing issues, or your card is bad. All of what you're experiencing sounds like a bad card, though.

I have a 5770 and have experienced no such issues. The ATI drivers work great, just so you know...
 
That's weird, there is definately something else going on--ATI drivers are fine now, have been for a while. I'd try to follow a logical process to narrow down what the actual issue is. It is possible you've got a bad card.

HOWEVER if you are an Nvidia fan...shoot, why not go grab a gtx470 and overclock it? 🙂
 
I agree your problems sound too severe for them to be the display driver only.
There are plenty of known problems with ATI drivers, but frequent glitches, crashing, and artifacting is a sign of bad hardware especially since you've tried different driver releases.
 
I myself have not had any driver problems with my 4870 1GB since I got it more than a year ago. If you're getting all those issues at stock speeds then it's probably a bad card.
 
I think messed up os/drivers. Still is a well known issue here - loyal nvidia customer switches to ati and gets every rare driver bug known to mankind. Ask hm. Probably best for you to stay with nvidia.
 
My 5770 issues had 2D Desktop crashing (with & without Aero), not entering power saving mode, enlarged mouse cursor and random mouse cursor artifacts.

Since 10.3, I no longer get 2D crashing without Aero (still crashes with Aero), enlarged mouse cursor and random mouse cursor artifacts. Funny thing is that I have not had a single non-recoverable crash in any game where load is above 80% for hours on end.
 
I still don't get how anyone can be a "fan" of a piece of silicon.

I just buy whatever is best at the time. Who cares who designs the thing.

I agree with the above, I also am not reading 2 pages of this thread going off on driver quality flaming. This definitely sounds like a graphics card memory or GPU issue. RMA.
 
Alright I found out that unlike Nvidia drivers, attempting to install older catalyst drivers on top of new ones will install sucessfully but not actually downgrade the driver version. Apparantly you have to uninstall->reboot->reinstall->reboot every time. After going through that I am now actually using 10.1 cat's instead of 10.4 and several of my issues have gone away (the flickering box and driver crashes). My monitor still won't go in standby though.

I'm pretty sure I thoroughly removed all the nvidia components beforehand but I guess the next step would be to try a driver cleaner program.

P.S. - To all the trolls, yes my thread is definitely flamebait, I did that on purpose out of frustration with ATI after never having significant issues with nvidia. However I assure you my problems are genuine and I am no noob computer builder.

The problem with that, as I've stated previously, is that it's a huge PITA to RMA a watercooling component, as I would be completely without my rig until the new card arrived, which may take longer than usual if they do not have any replacements in stock.
 
no issues whatsoever, since cat 9's til the 10.4's now
only the occasional hang in win7 (like twice in the last year)
