I guess this latest announcement from nVidia completely overshadowed the new "cutting edge" PC from nVidia........

GeForce PC Kit

geforce_pc_kit_low_3qtr.png

Some Relevant Specs:

Intel® Pentium E5300

2 GB DDR2

NVIDIA® GeForce® 9800 GT 512MB

CoolerMaster Elite 334 NVIDIA Edition

And if you buy it from CompUSA/TigerDirect, their partners in this, the included motherboard is:

MSI G31TM-P21 Motherboard

Ultra LS500 Lifetime Series 500W Power Supply

http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_geforce_pc_kit.html

Wow! So cutting edge, my 78 y.o. mother's newly built computer she got for Christmas is more powerful than this POS, and it was put together for under $300....albeit without the cutting edge 9800GT video card and awesome Ultra 500W power supply.

In all fairness that kit is listed for 500$ from Tigerdirect. I don't think it's that horrible a deal for someone who want's to build their own lower range gaming pc.

"Please note that this is the hard launch date- you'll be able to buy the cards on 3/26/10, NDA will expire, and there will be much fun to be had at PAX East. Hope to see you there."

From your good friend Rollo on another site. So we can buy them in a month. That is good news.

I think that's pure BS. If the date was that close they'd announce it to keep people from buying other cards instead of just announcing they are announcing.

I doubt this. The announcement said 'unveil' not 'launch', and the website says this:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/paxeast.html said:
NVIDIA Booth
Exhibit Hall D, Booth #1003- Test drive our highly-anticipated, next-generation GPU…you may even be able to buy one before anyone else

May be able to buy one before anyone else on March 26th which means 'anyone else' can't buy it on March 26th and even if you are there you just may be able to..

I'm glad it is Ati surviving the 3D graphics accelerator wars which started back in 95. Rendition, S3, Matrox, 3Dfx, and now nVidia. RIP nVidia.

rumors of nvidia's demise have been greatly exaggerated. are they getting their asses kicked for the past 6 mos? yes. but for the previous 15 mos they were a little better than amd, and for the previous 2 years before that they absolutely obliterated daamit. plus, the 40nm production problems at tsmc have limited the actual number of cards sold over the past 6 mos, further reducing nvidia's damage. Nvidia has so much mind share that even if fermi ends up being a true 2900xt clone their many fans will just take a pass to the next gen and see what rolls out. remember, amd came out with 2900 xt in may 07, but 3870 was out by nov. I see something similar from nvidia here, the only difference being that their slower than expected/large/hot card will actually be faster than the competition instead of slower so they'll at least have SOME pricing power.

The big fear I have for nvidia is not now but if they fail to deliver on 2 or 3 gens in a row. Daamit lost lots of mindshare when they sucked with 2xxx and were relatively weak with 3xxx. Remember how all the ati fanbois came out of the woodworks for 4xxx? That wasn't really a smashing success, it just didn't suck like the previous two gens had so people's expectations were very low. Nvidia, just like all companies, throws out a turd every now and then and calls it "the BEST thing EVER". it happened with nv30 and it is looking like that is on the plate now as well, but it is a HUGE stretch to simply write off the company for a poorly execcuted next gen launch.

NV30 was a bold design. The work and pains of that chip provided years of prosperity for Nvidia. What I mean by they got bit by the process bug was Nvidia is bringing out a bold arch this generation that required the newest process technology to hit their targets. Just like the NV30. And just like the NV30 their manufacturer failed. Biting Nvidia in the ass. It will be interesting to see how Nvidia copes with this set back. They were pretty damn quick with the NV35 which helped until the NV40 a year later opened up the flood gates.

This is so much like the NV30 it is like deja vu at this point.

I think it depends on where gaming goes and if ATI wants to get involved in the HPC market. If tesselation takes off in game engines they are forced to spend transistor counts in that dept. They may even have to go to a MIMD arch like Nvidia to get better performance. And of course they will need to up their double precision performance for the HPC market. And have they offered a better anistrophic filtering technique? They did that aggressive angle dependent AF in the R300 and havent looked back.

BFG10k did a very interesting analysys of the new AF in the 5xxx series over at ABT. According to anand it is "technically perfect", BFG isn't so sure, but everybody seems to think that amd's AF is significantly better now.

edit: according to bsn,

If the price of $699 stands, that will confirm that the yields of the parts are in dire straits indeed.

I think that's bs. If nvidia can sell the gtx 480 for $699 then it's because the performance is that good. I think that would be great news for all of us because you would basically be looking at a single gpu 5970, only without all the bs/driver issues that come with multi gpu. If gtx 480 is within 10% of 5970 that will be a huge win for nvidia imho and, while not justifying the long wait, will certainly put amd back on their heels a bit.

Another HUGE point to note right now in the Video Card industry is the LACK of DX11 titles, also the lack of more graphically intensive games, so I'm sure Nvidia has had time to think about all these factors and hence are pushing with their delays. Until demanding games come out, no real need to play them is there, i don't think manufacturers will push to sell their very best asap..Who knows, Nvidia probably has a huge sponsorship with plenty of game manufacturers anyway so they are taking their time.

Of course there's a lack of DX11 titles out. DX11 hasn't been available for a long time. There's already a couple games out and more coming and you can guarantee that since W7 has been selling infinitely better than Vista was, there will be more DX11 games than there were DX10 games in the same time frame.

Makes me even more happy I didn't wait. I've been a die-hard Nvidia fan for a long time but got sick of the waiting and lack of info. I'm enjoying awesome gaming now

Same for me.... Also the fact that when a card first comes out you/we will have driver problems that take months to iorn out. By that time I could still sell my 5870 for a good price and get the Nvidia card if it fits my needs/wants. By that time I'm almost at a year with my card.

Ouch... This launch smells of failure... Hopefully it won't. But all the signs are there.

LOL wow Drama!

If it wasn't for Intel's $1.25 billion dollar kiss, AMD would be in dire straits. Can you imagine the only two worthwhile gpu companies going under??? @#$@#$(@%+@#%@#%

Smells of failure? This is complete failure already. In the bleeding edge world of gpu's you're 6 months behind your competitor, you got that Jackass of a c.e.o. holding up a wooden mock up of fermi (pretending it's real), and now the big announcement is an announcement of an announcement. They can only hope fermi performs well and is competitively priced with the 58XX series.

March 25--Bitboys Oy release their killer Card
March 26--ATI/AMD announces they will not produce another Video Card
March 27--Jen-Hsun Huang stands in a booth, Fermi in hand looking bewildered as everyone walks by politely but disinterested

You gotta admit. NV's PR team is doing a fantastic job of keeping the buzz alive considering they've had nothing but their dicks in their hands for two quarters. I mean, we're talking bit boyz level vapor is all they had to work with since September, yet they're still keeping a chunk of mindshare.

Best post in this thread!
