ps. Your title is erroneous, since NV launched 600M series a day earlier, with no fanfare. So in fact its "NV launches rebadge, AMD responds in kind (with fanfare lol)".

It seems like aside from Intel everyone else future nodes are having major problems. I wonder how much more better the current cards would be if both Nvidia & AMD are given access to Intel Fabs.

You could run Crysis maxed at >60 fps..... eyeinfinity 3x 1080p with a single gpu that has a TDP of 150W.

This makes no technical sense. Those 28nm chips must be a long way off to bother with a full range of product releases.

This invalidates a lot of the rumour mill for 28 nm and 7000 series cards. If one bit of the rumour is so wrong there is a good chance the rest is as well.

I find that the (second) weird part about the launch is that they've named them '7600m', '7500m' etc ... that leaves room for other models with '30', '50', '70' etc at the end ... might those be the real 28nms?

they could at least remake them at 4-vliw...

now i wonder how much is the profit of those cards, if they don't even whant to make a new one with a arquitecture that have better performance per nm²

This doesnt look good for mobile parts for the next generation if both are releasing rebadges this late in the game.

So a die shrink is a rebadge?

Its a 28nm part. I;m pretty darn sure the 6xxx series was not a 28nm part. Die shrinks are what all semiconductor companies do, haven't you noticed?

At least these are the low end parts, meaning the higher end parts will probably be the 28nm parts. And they are being tiered downward --- 6630m is becoming 7500m, 6750m is becoming 7600m. Would be worse is 6750m became 7800m, no?

There is no die-shrink...

As a consequence we’re facing another rebadging situation: the 7000M series launching today is based on AMD’s Turks and Caicos GPUs, the same GPUs that make up part of the 6000M series. Thus AMD may technically be launching the 7000 series today, but it’s the 7000 series in name only. The launch of the 28nm Southern Islands architecture will happen soon enough, but it won’t be happening today. Ignore the product number—if you wanted to see new GPUs from AMD [cue Obi-Wan], these aren’t the GPUs you’re looking for.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. It actually seems like the AMD and NV are pretty much at the same stage of development of SI and Kepler, contrary to rumored six month lead AMD was supposed to have. Kind of a bummer too. I was looking forward to seeing a Radeon 7970 card pretty soon.

Then throw it away, because this isn't bait and switch, unless you think a 7600 is better than a 6750, in which case every new GPU series ever made pretty much is bait and switch.

People have been rebadging lower end GPUs and throwing them in as the low end of a new series for a while now, it's nothing new. Remember the Geforce 250 not long ago, or the Radeon 9000 a long time ago?
Not the same as the HD5700 -> HD6700 thing.

this is nothing new. both companies have been doing this rename thing for years and years now. the worst is for laptop parts. most of those laptop model numbers never equate to their similar-named desktop counterpart.
