Which should I get and why? I have had problems with Nvidia in the past. I hope this new Nvidia card has stepped it up from the older ones.

ohh boy..... *puts on flame suit* I feel much better now. In my experience and with my system the 6800gt was faster in my eyes than the x800pro I had. The 6800gt had a higher min FPS in everygame I play. Granted I'm limited by my lcd to 1280x1024. At this res the 6800gt is faster at everything I threw at it than my x800pro was. This is comparing the latest "official" drivers from each company.
My specs:
a64 3000+ @ 2.4ghz
vnf3-250
1gig pc3200
xp pro sp2 rc2

The GT wins this easily. Of course, both are NEXT to impossible to find for MSRP right now. I just spent 2 days looking for a GT before finally finding someplace with them in stock. Cost me $415 even then, but I was sick of looking around more and wondering when they would be back in stock.

6800GT. If you need convincing go over to hardocp and look at the Doom3 benchmarks. The GT hangs w/ the X800XT. So GT hands down. I have found taht NewEgg gets pretty regular shipments on them and they also give an ETA. I got mine there.

They are around regular shipments are coming into all the online retailers, but there is a lot of demand, especially with doom 3 just a week away. $399 for the Gainward with copper cooler shipped free 2-day from ZZF last friday.

absoutley not. You mean the GF6800U, NOT the GT! The GT can run on a 300w with no problems (if it has a dedicated molex connector) and has Dual DVI, and fits in only one slot. Oh, did I mention it runs cooler too?

you see, i believe this is true too, except that ATi cards just plain suck in OpenGL and gets like half the framerates compared to comparable DirectX games in terms of visual quality- so my interpretation is that the drivers just plain suck, but there is still a ton of unlockable potential in the ATi offering if/when a future rewritten release of the OpenGL drivers is finally offered. With that said, go with Nviia if you're main goal is to play Doom3.

Incorrect...

The ultra was stated to need 2 connectors and a 450, which they changed to 350..

Pros: Faster that x800
Cheaper
Works PERFECT with my Sparkle 350 and just about everyone elses..

See the bold[? It's a Sparkle. My power-up 400W (that came with my enermax case, WTF) couldn't hardly run an X800Pro, much less a 6800GT/U/J. I would recomend above 400W no-name PSUs, above 300W Antec, Sparkle, Enermax, etc...

ATI is charging way too much for the X800 Pro at $400 and personally, I believe ATI made a huge mistake for not making the X800 Pro a 16 pipe card.

6800 GT - not only is the performance pretty much on par as its equivalents, its got DIGITAL VIBRANCE CONTROL!!!!!
I know, I sound pathetic, but just turning this function on a little makes images come alive.

X800 Pro isn't a bad card and they oc well, but while they cost the same as a GT, it's GT all the way. I think we'll see the Pro's come down in price faster then the GT though.

I've been looking at benchmarks released (other than doom3) and the x800 pro seems to do much better under higher resolutions and with AA/AF turned up all the way. These I found on Tomshardware and this site. Everyone is talking about how the GT 6800 mops the floor when it comes to doom 3 (which is true), but you guys are forgetting that a very important direct x game is coming out ... must I say it?

Half Life 2!!! We haven't had benchmarks released since last year when the 9800 destroyed the geforce fx. Of course the 6800 is far superior to the fx, but I do wonder how the x800 will perform compared to the GT in direct x games. I know I'll be playing hl2 and its mods for many years (been playing the original hl & mods since 2001 when I got a real PC) so personally, I'm waiting til benchmarks are released before I decide to upgrade to either an x800 or a GT. If the GT comes very close to the x800, I'll get that because it's superior in other games, but I don't see how you guys can just write off the x800 like that.

Edit: I just looked at those bench's again and it's the x800 XT that outperforms the ultra many times, the pro is usually very close to the GT in direct x games but falls behind it in everything else.

I guess that makes my decision the GT (still waiting for hl2 bench's to be released before I buy it though)
