Half Life 2!!! We haven't had benchmarks released since last year when the 9800 destroyed the geforce fx. Of course the 6800 is far superior to the fx, but I do wonder how the x800 will perform compared to the GT in direct x games. I know I'll be playing hl2 and its mods for many years (been playing the original hl & mods since 2001 when I got a real PC) so personally, I'm waiting til benchmarks are released before I decide to upgrade to either an x800 or a GT. If the GT comes very close to the x800, I'll get that because it's superior in other games, but I don't see how you guys can just write off the x800 like that.

Edit: I just looked at those bench's again and it's the x800 XT that outperforms the ultra many times, the pro is usually very close to the GT in direct x games but falls behind it in everything else.

I guess that makes my decision the GT (still waiting for hl2 bench's to be released before I buy it though)

Oh, you mean this?

Or this?

Personally, I'm not sold that ATi will be significantly faster in HL2 anymore.

Wow, that's crazy.

It's also not even a "beta" the game isn't even close to being in its finished condition. That does bring up an interesting point. I'm not an ATI fanboy but I initially heard that ATI would rule on hl2 compared to Nvidia (this was before the 6800's came out). I'm still waiting for real benchmarks of the actual game to come out before I pass judgement.

I "heard" so much **** and ** before the X800 came out, and rumors in general (if you like ATI and you're on rage3d.com etc.)..and believe me, 101% of what you 'hear' i usually utter nonsense, overexaggeration or just not true.

Sorry i just can laugh at the thought that "...someone heard that ATI will wipe NVs a$$ once HL2 comes out" <---- PROOF ME WITH NUMBERS black on white

HOWEVER - in this thread there were also some good points.

People are thinking too easy ! The GT is not the better card once it is out that it performs better in D3. WHATEVER !

What, if the 6800 GT performs better in D3 (and obviously ONLY) - and otherwise has a pretty bad perfrmance once it comes to Antialiasing & Anisotropic Filtering.

I see tehre some huge drops in performance - and i disnt erad enough reviews yet where they compare the X800s and the GT ESPECIALLY when it comes to 4xAA and 8xAF

Ever since i own a RAdeon 8500 (and now a 9800 Pro) >>>ALL<<< my games without an exception run at 4xAA with 8xAF. If i were to get a 6800 GT (soon ?) and it turns out it performs GREAT in OpenGl/especialy D3....but it performs MISERABLE everywhere wlese (especially D3D !) and ESPECIALLY in 4xAA/8xAF (which i always use) - then i might think TWICE whetehr i actually WANT a 6800 GT or not.

Then i'd RATHER get a X800 with some less FPS in D3, but overall better performance in all other games, especially D3D - or, even better, i wait for the R500.

I'll wait for HL2 before I make any decision. A lot of FPS games did use the quake 3 engine, I think Doom 3 engine will be popular with game developers also.

i did some more research yesterday....you can say the two cards are on par, with either card SOMETIMES having the lead when it comes to AA and AF....depends on the game/engine. Maybe GT still overall the better card.

Well flexy there are a couple of errors with your post.

#1. Nvidia actually implements AA better and more efficently than ATI. THere problem lies in AF where it takes up one of there ALU's to do AF thats why you see such big drops there.

#2. Neither of these cards perform "miserable". The fact of the matter is that the GT is the better card for every game out there right now. Yeah the X800Pro beats it but what is 5fps not much and it certainly doesn't designate bad card good card. Right now your safe with either card however, the GT is generallyy the same price, has 16 pipelines instead of 12 many more features, right now it is just a better buy. A more interesting topic would be when ATI releases the X800GT. Then it will be better.

Also its not some less FPS in D3 it is a LOT the X800Pro gets massacred along with all the other ATI cards. Nothing against ATI but in DIII Nvidia crushed them utterly.

personally, even though i made the mistake of picking the 5900 over the 9800 during the last round (mainly due to a good price deal), i will stick with the 6800gt (when i decide to buy it in a few days/hours at least) because i personally don't like AA and have no concern for any scores that deal with it. AF i use, but AA never unless the game forces me to run in 800x600 or 640x480, in which case it won't matter which camp's AA i would use anyway. For some reason my eyes don't like how AA appears in games, other then perhaps a gentle touch of 2xAA at most, anything higher and the image looks too fuzzy for me.

and running at 1600x1200 i don't think 'jaggies' will be a concern (of mine) if they're not currently at 1024/1280.

but i'm guessing i'm in the minority on my AA views...so anyway :)

absoutley not. You mean the GF6800U, NOT the GT! The GT can run on a 300w with no problems (if it has a dedicated molex connector) and has Dual DVI, and fits in only one slot. Oh, did I mention it runs cooler too?

300W with 6800GT?? those things are power thirsty dude

wrong, it doesnt require a 450watt. can you explain how the 6800GT runs in SFF's?

450W Generic = 300W Brand name, either should get you by with the brand name being a better investment due to the stability of the lines

My 6800GT isnt loud either. The fan is thermally controlled, so unless you are gaming the fan isnt going full throttle, and when gaming, you wouldnt care.

yeah i wonder why do they ever make the pro a 12 pipeline card. they have got NVidia on their necks already.
And the X800XT is so hard to find.
mean time the 6800 GT rulez.

From what I have read they are pretty close. The nvidia is faster in doom3, and the x800pro is faster in far cry, I was actually going to get a 6800GT, but couldn't find one for less than $130 more than the x800pro I bought (at the time), and I didn't think it wa sworth the extra. I am very happy with my x800pro, but for the same price I am sure the 6800GT would be fine also. Price matters. If you can get a 6800 GT IN STOCK for the same as an x800pro, I would probably get the 6800GT ($400 or less)

I don't have any experience with the X800 Pro but my BFG 6800 GT OC has been great considering my processor (Athlon XP 2400+) is a big bottleneck. Doom 3, Far Cry, Dawn of War, etc... all look beautiful, considering how the X800 Pro has issues with Doom 3 and that the engine is going to be used in future games, I would go with a more future proof 6800 GT.

12 pipelines tha x800 pro but wins on 1600 1200 with all AA and AF, on games, like FarCry, for example and that engine based games, and future HL2?

i´m worried about that cuz i´m getting a 6800 GT soon
