That is probably the quintessential issue with this hobby. You can nickel and dime yourself into buying flagship everything through what seems like sound logic.

The 4090 is a pretty solid card for what you have to pay for it. There's little reason to believe it will stop being useful for a long time. The VRAM is more than sufficient, NVidia isn't goin to be able to get a massive node bump like they did between Ampere and Lovelace, and you have something that doesn't need fake frames or any other gimmicks so who cares if it won't get DLSS 4 or any future updates since by the time it needs any of that FSR will still be there.

When everything else has such terrible value, buying a 4090 is one of the more sound decisions you can make. That's the real sadness in all of this.
 
I still continue to believe that nVidia could just update to GDDR7 and make a decent performance jump. The 4060 might be the one exception though lol.

Whether it would be enough to move the needle to the point where people start buying is another story.

It's definitely going to age better than the 3090.

But you never know, perhaps Intel is going to pull a rabbit out of a hat and AMD is going to pull their finger out of..., and we'll see fierce competition again.

Well this comment, made me look, so thank you for that.

I saw an update on RTX with Portal and I thought I'd give it a try. It's a great little test, because it runs at a little above 30 fps with RTX (1080p mind you).

I made a video out of it (non monetized as always) since this is the best way to show it. I start with 1080p/ultra/rtx/orthodox dlss. The game runs fine, 60fps and all and is quite pretty for what it's showcasing. Then I move to disabling orthodox dlss and the performance drops severely. Then I want to see what dlss3 does and zomfg it sucks. Am I doing something wrong?


Why is nvidia promoting this crap? I mean dlss is great, but this frame gen thingy aint very useable, when performance is really needed. Thank god it had zero impact in my buying decision. Nvidia has so many other good features.

I assume you were frame capped in some way, and that didn't play well with frame gen. (although you were also getting sound artefacts, so maybe FG is just broken in the game)

-Yeah no way that's the standard FG experience, otherwise unless every person out there promoting it is a paid NV spokesman I don't see how the tech would not be getting dragged through the dirt.

That said, it's worth illustrating that framegen is not some silver bullet and shouldn't completely guide a purchasing decisions, maybe just put a little weight on the NV side of the scale.

The 3060 is a better experience than the 4060Ti with the latest version of TLOU at 1080p. It only gets worse at 1440p where the 3060 can manage a 30+ fps experience and the 8GB cards simply cannot.

Sure you can drop down to High settings but why when you don't need to on a cheaper, older card or on the 6700XT which is also cheaper.

Same in Hogwarts.

7600 at $269 is probably only just about okay until the $299 4060 launches in July where it will need a price drop.

At least the 7600 will be faster than the 6600 across the board.
 
This is one of the worse ever launches from NVidia.

Memory Bus width kills bandwidth too much and the cache can't compensate. The card just collapses at 1440p, essentially only about equal to 3060 Ti.

Plus $400 for 8GB makes no sense.

AMD has a great opportunity to completely DESTROY this card with a 12GB N32.

I wonder how NVidia will address this embarrassment (IMO they will just ignore it).

Agreed.

A $350-400 12GB N32 with 40CUs that clock decently better than N23 can will give you card that could land between 6750XT and 6800 performance. Call it a 7600XT or a 7700 and that would really rock vs the competition. Shame N32 seems to be MIA.

AMD probably wanted NVidia to show their hand, now that they have, there is probably a lot of smiling at AMD today.

Selling it as the 4060 for $300 would have been OKish. About 30% uplift over the 3060 for a small price reduction to compensate for the lesser VRAM.

But this is just tragic.

There is indeed so much room for AMD to launch something much more appealing.
