Gabe was a Microsoft guy and I'm sure he knows what's up, I'm sure Microsoft don't need reminding that Steam is a major contributor to Windows continued usage.

Exactly this, they wont shoot themselves in the foot like that. Literally the only reason i use windows at all is for gaming, if they kill steam ill go to linux full time and never look back, or spend a cent on MS products again. And im sure im not alone.

I'd just use a mac. Literally I would just use it for plex server/Kodi and basic internet usage. A MacBook with HDMI could do that for me easily. I'd still have my PS4 for games if it came to that. The windows store hasn't been too great in my experience as I mentioned, but they won't kill off Steam, GoG, Origin etc like that.

Rather use my PS4 than deal with a MS monopoly on Windows gaming. Not ashamed of it either.

Yes.

He doesn't just "know about videogames and tech". He is one of the few individuals who created videogame tech.

He's the guy who designed, created and programmed the Unreal engine himself in the nineties. He's been the leading architect for the Unreal engine since then. (After all, he's one of the founders of Epic Games). He's a purely technical guy, trying not to waste too much time on marketing and other fluff. If there is one person in the games industry who knows what he's talking about, it's Sweeney.

But you probably like some bloggers and dudes on twitter better .....

Just because he's smart doesn't mean he's immune to going crazy and buying into crackpot bullshit.

If anyone is interested, Peter Bright at Arstechnica gives a thorough debunking here: http://arstechnica.com/information-...microsoft-will-use-windows-10-to-break-steam/

Get your facts and rationality out of here! TIM SWEENY KNOWS EVERYTHING MICROSOFT IS GOING TO DO IN THE FUTURE!

Had a bit more time, read the Ars Article - this is off base.

Multiple sites picked this up, but all appear to be intertwined with the same story/interview.

There are still some possible issues with UWP & Steam, but it's more on how Steam patches things, so if this aspect breaks it a Steam issue to fix.

The Steam issue could still cause User headaches, but there's plenty of lead time for Steam to get ahead of this and straighten out the potential issues.
Whether they do or not is another story.

Mods, go ahead and kill this thread.

I was kidding but doesn't Sony kind of have a monopoly on PS4 games & gear?

When I played quantum break it was getting 25fps at 1080p sometimes and it didn't look any better than the Xbox one game to me. That is a problem but more one that has to do with the developer. It was just barely playable for me on the PC because MS and the developers did a lazy port. Then they lock you out of the game folder so installing mods may be near impossible. Setting the install location for games through the store is convoluted and annoying. The whole system just doesn't work well. With steam, origin, GoG etc I can choose where to install, mods aren't a problem and I feel the overall experience works better

At least with a ps4 I don't deal with that whole mess. I want my PC to be a PC where I am in control and have options. I already have a console and I don't fancy MS trying to turn my PC into an Xbox if that's their goal.

Glad you did some reading up and came to this conclusion. Sorry if I was "steamed" earlier in this thread. I just got annoyed seeing this topic so many times yesterday.

Have a good one man.

Wait...

Is Steam Machine actually a thing? It's popular? (Genuine question).

Yes. No.

But this is all pointless to talk about, in 5 years the Linux kernel will make Steam completely unusable. It could happen!

I think all those jokes about master race etc are pretty dumb. A gamer is a gamer to me. I don't care what system you use.

I agree its just a fun competition to me. Consoles lost me at the PS3 & wii, every game was either a COD shooter which is unplayable with a controller for me or some stupid young kids game. We had a crap ton of fun with our PS1 & PS2, the 3 was just too much of a disappointment for both of us.

Actually it wouldn't. The kernel is gpl license and valve could release an identical version with minor tweak to improve steam. That's the difference between close source and open source.

But then we'd be talking about steams tweak will prevent buying from any other source but steam.
