But you really don't think this has not been going on for the last 20 years?.
There is a difference however. The phone networks are considered PRIVATE and require a warrant to access Call Detail Records (well they used to before Obama).
The Internet is a PUBLIC network, not PRIVATE.
Actually the vast majority of the internet is private. It's just open for the public to view.
No, they're picking up your phone book, finding out who you called, when you called, where you called from, and possibly even what you talked about - and even encrypting it isn't a safe bet either. So what's going to be the next outrage, that the NSA can pick up a phone book and see who your neighbors are?
You willingly post things online. Yes, it's public.
Someone taping you without your knowledge isn't quite the same thing. However: let's say you're walking down the street and something goes down- a crime/terrorist act/whatever- and it's recorded on nearby ATM cameras, other people's cellphones, etc.
Guess what- law enforcement agencies are going to be reviewing all the footage it can get its hands on- with you in it, doing whatever it was you were doing- and there's not too much you can do about it.
So basically- there ARE cameras and mics around recording you way more often than you probably realize. Just a fact of life.
Anyway, in general it amazes me that anyone in this day and age really believes there's any real privacy on the Internet, or even sillier, that there's some guarantee of it.
For the most part, probably no govt. agency will ever pick through people's crap online because there's no real reason to- but the second someone becomes a main suspect in some high-profile national case, yes, EVERYTHING you ever put on the Internet is up for grabs.
Personally, I don't particularly care for that fact, but it is a fact.
The Internet is a public network, as such anything on it is public information/data.
No, they're picking up your phone book, finding out who you called, when you called, where you called from, and possibly even what you talked about - and even encrypting it isn't a safe bet either.
Roads are public.
LOL +1 So true. Sometimes people get hurt and ask "Don't you read my face page?" I don't even read MY Facebook page. Last time I logged on a woman had sent me four posts, all of which had been removed for TOS violations. I do not know what they said. Nor do I care.I expect the first round of posts from the supporters of these tactics anytime...
Anyone the Facebooks has had to know that everything they put on their page is being logged by:
Facebook, your employer, the stalker down the road, the NSA and every other police agency larger than Mayberry.
I don't care where you ate lunch, I really don't...
Brian
Southpark did a great episode on this.I don't see how this would be of any surprise. You put it out there on a PUBLIC network, it is accessible by anybody and everybody. Facebook is the greatest info gathering tool there is for the government and folks do so willingly.
LOL I have one recurring friend request in this category. Yeah, please let me make social ties to the woman who called me at 2AM to tell me she was getting a divorce. What better way to show the NSA that I need government running my life?Like I said earlier - facebook is the greatest thing that could ever happen to government keeping tabs on everything you do and who you are connected to. You are willingly putting that information out there knowing it is a PUBLIC network, you have no privacy when you do such. It's a goldmine for them.
I consider this reason #3 why I would never have anything to do with facebook. #1 = I don't want crazy exes contacting me.
Zuck: Yeah so if you ever need info about anyone at Harvard
Zuck: Just ask
Zuck: I have over 4,000 emails, pictures, addresses, SNS
[Redacted Friend's Name]: What? How'd you manage that one?
Zuck: People just submitted it.
Zuck: I don't know why.
Zuck: They "trust me"
Zuck: Dumb fucks
That's actually a fair comparison, and so is the cops clocking your speed or running your plates as you drive by. The NSA is observing traffic.
No, to use your analogy the police must be tracking where you go and where you came from and who is at both locations.

This just keeps getting worse and worse; Keith Alexander and crew are out of control.

At this point you have to assume that anything and everything you do online is tracked and indexed by the NSA, without oversight. And you have to assume that this information will be given to law enforcement agencies at will.
I miss the idea of a free America.![]()
So here's a thought.
Who do you feel more threatened by.
A fanatic whose primary home of residence is a mud hut in a desert on the other side of the world, and whose prized worldly possession is a 30 year old AK47 or maybe a 20 year old RPG.
Or, a government that is right here, with millions of people doing its bidding, determined to track your every move, catalog your behavior, and which has no compunction about re-defining your rights into non-existence?

You act like the Repubs are any different. Same wolf, different sheep costume.
On Facebook? Yeah, I'm not too particular about that. Wall posts are indeed quite public.I have no issue with the NSA looking at information that these companies are already collecting and accessing for their own purposes, let alone information people themselves are throwing out there with he intent of having the world view. I wouldn't expect anything less from a national security agency. Cracking encryption and tapping conversations willy nilly is another matter and should be scrutinized, but bashing the NSA for following you on facebook is absurd.
And with the exception of the insane radicals who are bent on destroying "The Great Satan," or are otherwise on some crazy religious crusade given to them by their god (huh...kind of like how our politicians sometimes talk :hmmSo here's a thought.

An unfortunate weakness in the system, for sure, and a very old one at that. That's actually a fair comparison, and so is the cops clocking your speed or running your plates as you drive by. The NSA is observing traffic.
