Well I'm pretty sure he doesn't understand the difference between the two, that just leaves one very clear option that I personally realized a long time ago.
 
Fuck that, I don't like the guy, but he got fired for this? I guarantee you most people feel this way. It's a legitimate reason to be fearful, just like riding in a car and feeling the driver could crash at any second.

I have listened to him for years. He isn't liberal at all in my opinion. I always counted on him for a right wing slant in any discussion.
 
Fair and balanced is a misnomer in itself in regards to real journalism.

It is a myth that every story has 2 sides--or rather, two equally valid arguments.

NPR is, and has been for at least 3 decades, as good as it gets in terms of journalism in the US.

This sucks though. Never heard anything but straight reporting from Juan.

It is basic human instinct to associate. When Williams looks at a person dressed in typically islamic\middle eastern garb or has a middle eastern complexion it isnt xeonophobic to be worried. It is a common human reaction of associating hijacking of airplanes with people who fit that description. Firing him over that is simply fucking stupid.

NPR wants political correctless employees. They are not fair and balanced. Firing Williams, an exemplar for liberals and a personal role model of the highest order, is just another confirmation of this.

It's kind of a shame that you have to take the time to educate those here that just grunt out the party line. Those that don't know who Juan Williams is, what he's accomplished where he's employed and how many different news venues he has and continues to contribute to. I don't always agree with Juan - far from it, but I respect him because he's willing to listen to differing opinions and admits when he is wrong or off base and typically does it with humility.

You have more patience than I do sir. A thread like shows who is really paying attention and who is regurgitating talking points. There are a number of knee-jerk reactions in this thread from people who know nothing of Juan Williams. The mere mention of FOX just gets a Pavlovian response.

He'll do just fine without NPR.

People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch anyone who disagrees with them.
 
This was the right thing to do. Someone who represents the news organization and says that all Muslims who appear Muslim make them worry about them being terrorists isn't acceptable.

Except to Fox.

Williams isn't as bad as most on Fox, he isn't a general bigot it seems, but NPR has higher standards and would have no business with such an irrational, anti-Muslim view.

Of course, the right-wing bigots will now play the victim. They don't get to do ANYTHING.

I'd have been ok with an apology from Williams, given his lack of this sort of thing generally, but I'm ok with this approach too.

Funny, I don't see the righties with the same complaint about Helen Thomas' treatment.

No, they piled on to say how glad they were for her to have to resign. She was an expressing an opinion about the justice of Israel being on the land it's on, not an irrational opinion stigmatizing all Jewish people as likely enough to be terrorists that she is afraid to have them on planes. I don't see the righties protesting Rich Sanchez too much, either.

No, that's all part of an irrational fear, which supports bigotry. How can you ask people to treat Muslims as equal people with all the rights they have when they view them this way?

The same thing happened with blacks up to the civil rights movement, people's 'discomfort' led them to be happy to support 'separate' space from blacks to stay comfortable.

People talk about right-wing media spreading fear of people like Muslims, this is the result.

And when the NY community center is made an issue, they say 'NO!!!!!' loudly.

There's a quiet hate that feeds on itself, that's something the fear does. It takes standards, saying 'you can't spread this fear', to help improve things and reduce bigotry.
 
As a fan of NPR, this is ridiculous.

FYI, Juan Williams is black and very liberal. He was just expressing his attitudes. I'll bet a lot of money he doesn't think that all muslims on planes are actually terrorists.

It's truly pathetic how far the pandering to Islam has gone. Now it's not even safe to express fear of Muslims.
 
I agree he shouldn't have been fired but I've never observed Juan Williams to be anything extraordinary.

PJABBER, I don't believe the fair-use doctrine protects against copying-and-pasting entire articles, and thus your habit of doing so constitutes copyright infringement. I am certainly not an IP lawyer but I'm fairly certain what you're doing is unlawful and could expose our gracious hosts to legal liability.
