How can you sell software for decades as a "product" and then suddenly claim it's a "service"

I don't see how this is legal... There are no "products" that you pay for on an indefinite ongoing basis...

Software is not a service, plain and simple, you buy it and use it...

They can charge you for the licences, but how easy would it be to defeat whatever way they choose to enforce the licenses...

The sad part about this is that they could do it and make money off it because there are enough morons in the world, and enough companies that are dependent on their software...

All I can says is :|

Looks like M$ is just trying to get more money...like they need it.

Would the subscription fee even work? M$ likes to come out with upgrades fairly often so say I bought WinXP and I have to pay on it for the next 5 years. Now, 2 years after I buy it, M$ comes out with an upgrade. Will I have to pay a subscription fee for the upgrade if I buy that too?

UnixFreak,

Come on, now. Does Windows Plug and Play need work? Sure, everybody knows that. But, to say that Linux is better at it is a HUGE stretch. Hell, I had to manually edit lilo.conf just to get Linux to recognize more then 64MB of RAM on my machines.

Linux is a great OS, no question. If I didn't think so, I wouldn't be beating my brains out trying to learn it. But, for ease of use, it is light years behind Windows.

Ever leased a car or rented an apartment? This isn't all that far out of an idea, get with reality man. I don't think it'll happen, hopefully the industry will reject it.

russ,
Maybe I am just taking for granted that I have been using it for years, so it seems easy for me. I dont know. Its not as easy as windows, but It is catching up, rapidly, and getting progressively easier.

A big problem is this:
MS doesn't support products more than 5 years old
The software will need MS's support to work
After 5 years your ol' standby will be stuck in park
Options? Upgrade to the newest version of windows that wil require a new computer to run smooth.

I have a TV tunercard with the capability to take radio and encode to MP3, to enable this I have to go online and register it to get instructions. The company is big, they'll be around. 3dfx is a household name right? Now I have a TV tuner card that cannot do what it advertizes because the company no longer exists.

Software should be able to work on it's own.
