I wonder at what point will you hit the voltage wall with that chip?

you can go up to 1.4 if you want. it's not like you have to inch through every single voltage notch. xbit got theirs up to 4.4 with 1.3v using the intel H55 board. actually, it was a pentium g9650, so even lower bin.

Nice but why the 540? Every value clocker knows you buy lowest end chip in iteration. (530)

I saw a few posts about him wanting to game at 5Ghz, so that's why he was going dual instead of quad or something.

Nothing wrong with dual. Quad is over hyped unless you encode 500 DVDs a year and some other things. Plus it hurts OCs for things that matter like games :D

I want to play with 5Ghz but gaming at 5Ghz would be nice as well :)

Exactly.

45nm may not overclock as well, but the better memory controller and increased L3 cache give the Core i5 750 better IPC.

I think the bargain gaming chip we are all looking for is L5609 (32nm quad core/No HT/12mb cache).

Not sure about useless, but I would be impressed if it can be pushed close to or over 5ghz.

Grr I thought we already covered this in the other thread :)
There is little point in dual if you want to be set for the future. People saying you don't need more than a dual (even with Hyperthreading) is like all the people that said "there are no multithreaded games, so just get the fastest single core available". Then people bought FX-55's and Athlon64 4000+'s and overclocked them like crazy...and then Oblivion came out and the people who put that money towards a 4800+ came out ahead.

Same will happen with Dual/Quad as developers get better at multithreading.

I think as long as the mainboard supports CPU upgrades a person would be just fine with a Intel hyperthreading dual core.

Games and web browsing/email just don't require much in the way of CPU power. Heck this Core i3 even beats Athlon II x4 in Dragon Age Origins.

LOL hard to predict- nevertheless best buys in CPU right now IMO are $90 castillos or $130 clarkdales. The former you *can*, 74% chance, make into a powerful Quad and OC the later can OC sky high w/ performance surpassing anything else in majority of today apps. Hehe I like that C&C.

If 4-cores become the norm, I'd want 6-cores. If 6-cores become the norm, I'd want 8-cores. I'd always want extra headroom so I won't be limited by busy CPU.
This is the kind of notion gamers don't get. I understand that while you're gaming, you probably can't do other tasks, but gaming isn't the only area where CPUs are made for.
