Has nothing to do with decisiveness. Has everything to do with being able to watch "on demand" without hassles. It's what TV is headed for, whether the networks want it or not.

The key question is how advertisers will respond. Once this technology is ubiquitous, will advertisers still want to pony up millions of bucks for ads that are never seen?

I'm guessing that means UK broadcast TV, since the single dissenter mentions how he wouldn't be impressed unless it did 80 channels worth of recordings.. Which means the thing has 5 or 6 tuners and some big HDs...not exactly revolutionary. I could accomplish the same thing with a couple more tuner cards, a registry hack, and some bigger HDs on my MCE box.

Now give me something with half a dozen cablecard tuners with full digital & HDTV support with that sort of storage, and I'll be impressed.

So it records a bunch of stuff I don't want, just to avoid using a guide, and no HDTV? That might be fine for the britts, since they only have 3 channels or so, but it's aint gonna wash with Directv. I'll stick to my Tivo.

not really out of the world.. the new sage tv interface(currently beta) supports HD. Shoudnt be too hard to get a whole bunch of hard drives and a bunch of aver A180s (HD and$80)

Because the bandwith required would be the same as decoding each channel and recording them simultaneously. Since all you save is CPU power, which is outpacing disk bandwidth anyway, there is no point.

Or how about that TV beer commercial with the seriously hawt girl that your friend told you about, and it was on last night during the halftime show but you were in the kitchen at the time.

The point of this thing is that you don't have to plan ahead. You don't have to pick which show to record in advance. You don't have to worry about forgetting to set the Tivo to record a certain show.

If you're completely anal, then no, you don't need this thing. But if you forget once in awhile, or if you miss seeing something on TV because you didn't know that it was going to be on, then this new recorder can be useful.

How many times have we seen people asking for vidcaps of something that was on Leno last night, or the fight that broke out during the NBA game, or the "wardrobe malfunction" during the halftime show?

It's no where near that. My HD tivo currently has a 250GB drive and it will do 35 hours of HDTV. I get 15 channels in HD right now, not counting the Sunday Ticket. 15 x 24 = 360 hours per day x 7 days = 2520 hours per week. 2520 / 35 = 72 250GB drives / 4 = 18 TB per week. Keep in mind that of those 15 channels only 4 come close to broadcasting in HD for 24 hours, so 18TB per week should be fine as long as you dont do much saving of programs.

Someone check my math though, I've been drinking.

No matter how you justify it there is going to be a LOT of crap on TV that you will NEVER have any desire to watch. A TIVO with 8 recorders and 3 terabytes of space would far outweigh any usefullness of this device (and that's for someone that watches a lot of television). IMO a current TIVO is worth more than it, I know what I want, I can set up season passes to watch what I want and the internet exists for those "clips" that I miss (I think that's happened twice in 5 years).

The functionality of a device that records everything is just assine. Not only is it going to cost a bloody fortune (and always will) it's going to spend 90% of it's time recording stuff that you will never watch, and all that recording space buys you one week of time shifting. I have close to year old recordings on my TIVO that I haven't gotten around to watching.
