Now they're buring Old Glory in Berkeley...

CNN Video

Just great.

What idiots all the sudden equate recruitment center with war in Iraq? Even if we were not fighting in Iraq, the center would still be there. Or would it? Why won't these Communist, hippies just come out and say that they hate all war and don't want the USA to have a military at all?

I'm glad I'm not the President. If I were a lame duck like Bush, I might just "send in the Marines" to invade Berkeley and give them something to cry about.

Down with the First Amendment!

Look, if you disagree with the protestors, join the 2000 counter-protestors who went down there and did just that. Or if you like, rail against what they are protesting for here. But to claim they don't have the right to protest, or to insinuate the military should round up the protestors, makes them look more american than you, flag burning or no.

Trust me, you're not the only one.

Do you view what happened at Kent State many years ago as a good thing? Bush is a worthless president, but at least he isn't a psychopath like you.

My statement does not imply violence at all. Perhaps Marine-enforced curfew?

What's funny is that you're the one being a communist and you don't even realize it.

Bush has done more to hurt our military recruiting than war protesters could ever hope to do.

Our troops should be used more responsibly. We owe them that if nothing else.

Those people are scum. The American flag stands for a lot more than just a current administration's policies.

Disagree with them or not, it's their right to speak out, misguided as it may be.

In your opinion maybe. No one owes me anything. As long as I get my paycheck, I'm fine, I know what I signed up for.

Someday maybe you'll understand that exercising the very rights that make this country different from others is not a reason to make broad unjustified attacks about people. It's not possible you could have a friend, who you really like, who might agree with the protestors? Would that transform your friend into scum? It's easy to demonize from afar.

"Their position is ridiculous and without merit" = fine. Now they get to say why they think you're wrong. Debate ensues.
"They are scum" = Now you've hurled an insult and they will simply return in kind. Debate is now closed. see the difference?

Yep; burn away if they so desire. Don't mind me if I use my free speech to call them disgusting or that I find their actions disgraceful.

Burning the flag is a disgrace to all the men and women who died to protect your right to do so. I hope these butt smacks burn in a lake of nuclear fire while being electrically kept alive and ants eating their peckers and etc....

True dat.

As much as I despise them for burning the flag, I'll always argue for their right to do so. As long as it's not MY flag, they they can burn all of them they want in protest. THAT is part of the First Amendment...
Protecting speech you like is the easy part...it's when you DON'T like it that defending free speech becomes difficult.

Anyone who thinks burning a flag should be illegal is being anti-American, even if they don't realize it...

Hmmmm ......... how did I know this would turn into a BDS thread?
What the hell does Bush have to do with a bunch of anti-American wackos?
Sure they have the right to protest just as much as I have the right to call them repugnant, despicable, ungrateful cowards.

Your argument is logically self-defeating. Men and women died to protect our right to burn the flag, so we shouldn't burn the flag. They died so we COULD burn the flag in protest.

No, the flag is a symbol of the country, not of what people died for. People died for freedom, which includes free speech, which this is.

It's a disgrace to all of the men and women who died to protect our freedom that you'd even suggest that they should die for using that freedom.

I shall nickname you Stalin. OP is Mao.

Nobody is saying you can't call them that. I just get pissed at people who suggest they should be punished for exercising their rights.

Still an improper use of our armed forces, and still a method of stifling free speech. Nut job, anyone?

Sometimes I really get worried about this country. People who supposedly love freedom so much as to get insulted over the burning of a flag are so willing to stifle freedom when it doesn't agree with their viewpoint.

What's worse is that they are willing to use our own army to police these actions, like they have never heard of Posse Comitatus.

Fricking fascists.

Yes I understand rhetoric well enough. Where you're mistaken is thinking that their action of burning the American flag is any kind of valid point that can be responded to. I see it as an insult in itself, and therefore the debate is already closed when I call them scum. In my opinion, yes as people they are scum. If my friend did that I would be pissed at him and if he didn't look back and regret what he did afterwards, I wouldn't be friends with him (or her) anymore. My grandfather fought in World War II, my other grandfather immigrated here after living in the forest of Austria for years, so I don't appreciate people destroying that flag. It means a lot to me and my family, it is the same reaction you'd get if you spat on my granddad's grave.

I never said they didn't have the right to do it. What the hell is with people making assumptions about positions here? I remember trying to debate terminology in the illegal immigrant debate and everyone jumped all over me for wanting open borders. Seems the same thing here, now I'm against free speech apparently.

The flag burners are just trying to make a statement and get attention. If it wasn't for their flag burning chances are their 'plight' would be a lot less newsworthy.
