While in lived in Korea, I encountered this a few times. Once I was invited to a friend's place in a small apartment complex; the windows were open. Suddenly in the middle of dinner, the couple next door starts screaming. The husband is raving drunk, and it sounded like he was beating his wife, because she was yelling and crying. Then their daughter started crying because she was viewing the whole thing. We didn't know what to do, partially out of fear. If this guy is crazy enough/drunk enough to beat his wife, what could he do to us? That and we were Americans who couldn't speak Korean. It makes one feel quite awkward. Eventually he stopped beating her but there was much emotional tension left.
The OP did the right thing, something I wish I could have done.
