NFS4, I've replied to your PM. I have the 52x/24x/52x ROM for the Lite-On drives. I just need to locate a flash utility so the process can be carried out. I'm going to walk through the process on my drive, detail the procedure and then post the results here - and reply back to your PM.

Well, I got the flash program from up above. All I need is the firmware file.

Just picked up the Memorex 48x24x48x CDRW from staples a couple days ago. Was $63 with additional $20 rebate based on wje's threads elsewhere (thanks wje@!). Just waiting for memorex to post the 52x firmware :)

Lark888,

I've located the 52Maxx firmware which I will send to you via E-mail. However, check out the following thread where I worked through some issues I was having with my firmware update: CD Freaks Forum -- I was successful in getting my Memorex 48/24/48 drive flashed to the Lite-On firmware 52/24/52 release.

People are reporting times of 2 minutes and 30 seconds to cook a 700 MB disc at 52x. Now, that is fast! Heck, I remember my old 2x Memorex writer that I purchased nearly 3 years ago for about $160 -- with a price match, mind you -- and it took 40 minutes to write a 650 MB CD. And you wouldn't touch your PC (no multi-tasking, folks) because you didn't want to create a coaster. Technology is awesome! :)

Should you have any questions, please E-mail me because my PM area is near capacity. Thanks! :)

Yes, but for those of us stuck with 16x and 24x writers, the time savings is even greater. However, I will point out that getting this drive isn't about speed - but more about features. The 48x/12x/48x drives can't write at a continuous speed across the disk like the new 48/24/48 & 52/24/52 drives. Also, these newer driver support Mt. Ranier much better than some of the older models. Whether you pick up the Cendyne for $49 or the Memorex for $39, you are getting the latest and greatest technology for a great price. I've never been on the bleeding edge before because the prices were not worth it. However, at $39 or $49, many people can afford the latest technology - today.

It could be out of stock at the on-line store. Being such a hot deal, I could see why it's already out of stock.

Has anyone seen it in stock at OfficeMax.com?

This deal is dead if you can't get it online.

I thought that the lite-on 40x burners supported PCAV writing as well as mt rainer (with the latest 40x firmware)? (you can also flash the 40x lite-ons to the 48x becasue of the same chipset?, but you cannot flash a 40x-->48x-->52x....)

So, essentially, the newer 48x24x48 liteons are upgradeable to the 52x specs, and, they have better PCAV (or is it straight up CAV?) and mt rainer support thant the older 40x and 48x liteons?

The 48x/24/48 52x/24/52 varieties are based on the Mediatek "6" chipset which supports straight CAV. The 40x that's getting flashed to 48x supports P-CAV. Yes, both will support Mt. Ranier. However, the CAV writing is more essential here.

I'll need to dig up the article link on the CAV & P-CAV information. ;)

I can't believe everyone is trying to get all over this deal today when the real "sleeper" deal is with the Memorex 48/24/48 that's available from Staples: $39 - after a $20 rebate/$10 instant rebate and $10 coupon.

Link to the drive at Staples.com: Memorex 48Maxx Drive

Note: All 48x Memorex drives are Lite-On drives from what I've read. No guesswork here like there is with some of the Cendyne drives. ;) Sh!t, with the way I'm pimpin' Lite-On, you'd think I work for them - but, I don't. :D

Thanks for the heads up. I was considering the new Yamaha drive, but now I'm stuck between the two!

I've printed out the OfficeMax.com page that appears after you click on one of the online coupon links, taken the printout to the store, and they have accepted it (the page shows what the offer is, and the time period it is valid). Never hurts to try that. If one store or manager says no, then try another store or different time. If you can get the actual coupon code, that might help too.

The drive is not available online, the item number doesn't work. :(

I printed out the office max webpage that says $20 off $100 only for OfficeMax.com and took it to the Office Max in Irvine. The manager took his time deciding on whether or not he was going to allow it. But he did and said I should try to find a coupon with a coupon code next time. Pretty sweet deal, but I imagine YMMV for everybody. I called and confirmed the internet coupon with two separate people before I went and the manager was a very cool customer about it all.
