I jumped on that Staples 40x Cendyne deal. I'm hoping I don't get burned by a lame drive. Guess I can always sell it or something if it sucks.

Yes, it is a Lite-On. It's an OEM version of the LTR-52246S. I have the CenDyne and the retail version of the LTR-52246S. The only difference is that it says CenDyne on the label and there is no "www.liteonit.com.tw" on the front of it. The drive's ID string even says "LITE-ON LTR-52246S" so you'll be able to use the firmware updates on Lite-On's website.

Great deal btw.. Thanks!

It's as good as a Lite-On can be. They're affordable and are fast. At least CenDyne's tech support is better than Lite-On's. Their's is pretty much nonexistent.

At 52x? Of course they're noisy.

You could get the same drive at Staples for $10 less. Here's how. Staples has the Memorex 48x/24x/48x on sale for $69.99.

$69.99 Regular price
-$10.00 Coupon from Huge Wallet
-$20.00 Mail-in rebate
= $39.99 + tax (after coupon and rebate)

Plus, the drive can be flashed so it gets to the 52x/24x/52x level.

Just how fast is the drive, you ask?? My memorex is still running @ 48x (until I flash it) - but, I used some unknown, cheap generic media of a questionable speed rating. Using CloneCD, I was able to cook a disc with the Mac OS 10.2 (Jaguar) backup in just under 3 minutes. Now, that's smokin'

Whether you get the drive from Office Max or Staples, it is the right Lite-On burner to buy. You can find the 40x burner that can be flashed to 48x, but it's not the same burner. This Lite-On burner is the "big daddy" to buy at the moment. It will feature full support for Mt. Ranier, and currently supports CAV writing technology. Spend a few more $$ today - instead of a few more $$ tomrorrow.

Oh, and all Memorex drives are supposed to be exclusively made by Lite-On. Other "repackagers" use a variety of drives which may/may not mean you're getting a Lite-On. With the Memorex, you're assured to get a Lite-on Drive.

Enjoy! :D :)

Thanks for the deal Mystic.

Just read the "end of the line" article, it said 52x media will be available by the end of the year. Also, I caught this little tidbit:

"With regards to current product, they all have 48X capability," Yeager said. "If you look in the (52X) drives, all of the firmware codes are for 48X media."

I saw one on the OM shelf on Monday, and it had a Lite-On part number (LTR-52246) for the drive model number. FYI, the box is smaller and looks a little different from the earlier CenDynes.:)

Actually, I also noticed that my Memorex (Lite-On) 48/24/48 had a smaller box, too. It was slightly smaller than the box for the Cendyne 40x drive sitting next to it. I guess just like software titles moving to smaller boxes, component manufacturers are potentially starting the same trend. I guess we'll finally reach a desired level of compactness when the device we're purchasing at the retail level only has a simple piece of bubble wrap placed around it along with a UPC symbol sticker attached. :D :D

so.. is it a good drive? how noisy is it?
Surprisingly, my reads at 48x and my high speed burns are not nearly as noisy as I thought they would be. Actually, it only seems *slightly* more noisy than my 24x Lite-On was. Certainly, it's quieter than the old 32x CD readers that really sounded like jet aircraft taking off - before improvements were made to the drives to quiet them down. :)

Is there a B&M version of this deal? I can only find an online coupon. Otherwise awesome deal.
