20 Feet from Stardom - 10/10

WOW! I watch a ton of movies but almost never feel a desire to review them. This one just blew my mind.

This is a documentary about background singers active in the last 50 years or so. Several of the most important ones are interviewed and profiled, and they also include interview segments with Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, Sting and Stevie Wonder among others. The whole thing is absolutely packed with electrifying musical moments (some you know, some you don't) and awesome archival footage. The movie is moving and stirring and just amazing overall. By far my favorite film this year.

I'm sure you'll enjoy it. It's always been my favorite. There even seems to be a NGE reference in the first short despite the movie being released only a couple months after NGE started in 1995:
While looking for a woman named Eva the main character is being chased by armed flying security sentries disguised as cherub statues. When the dispatcher asks if he see Eva, he replies "No, but I see angels!"

yeah i didn't know anything about the movie before i saw it, just seemed like a long music video. not into artsy films for the most part. i also thought the whole premise how they got the money was dumb. just not my type of movie.

Wow, it must have been a piss poor year for film in 2004 considering "Return of the King" won the Oscar for Best Film Editing.

What can I say, that award was downright stupid.

evil dead (new one) - 5/5

holy shit this movie was REALLY good. horror movies this good don't come around often anymore. i haven't seen the original one so i can't compare this to it, but damn it was really good throughout. seems as of recent a lot of horror movies fall off like the last 20% of the movie or so. this one never let up and just had an overall great atmosphere. i definitely said "ooooh shit!" a few times through the movie, and almost had to turn away at a few scenes because they were nasty and you knew what was coming, but that is what made it so great. most horror movies now a days don't do that to me anymore, but this one did.

WHAT!!!!! It is on Netflix streaming. I don't know if somebody sitting down and watching the original for the first time in this day and age though would love it but you should still watch it. Evil Dead 2 is on Amazon Prime and is the one most people think of and love. Was thinking about watching it tonight since nothing is on.

Still in theaters. Worth seeing there even if you have a nice home theater in my opinion (and I do). The only confound is that it's mostly showing in indie theaters, so if your local indie doesn't have a good sound system you will miss out a bit.

It wasn't supposed to. It was meant with the intent of serious gore/horror.

I had the chance to sneak peek this over the weekend:

Europa Report - 7/10 - Let me start by saying, that contrary to the way the trailers come off, this is NOT a monster movie. It is straight up sci-fi that has a very real edge to it. It should please all the "omg that doesn't happen in space" people.

For those who don't know, it's basically the story of a private company funding a trip to Jupiter's moon Europa where they think they have found proof of water under the ice. They feel that sending humans rather than probes will get them more conclusive data about if there is life there since humans can adjust to situations.

At first it can be a bit confusing because it is mostly after the events told through "found" footage (which is really just delayed transmissions), but not always told in order of events. There is a one point where they go backwards in time (or at least that's how it seemed) after they had already landed on the moon, to an event that killed off one of the crew in the main ship orbiting the moon. I was scratching my head on that.

I noticed the overall reviews of this movie seem to be mediocre so far and I'm not really sure why. I compared much of what happens in this film to Apollo 13, only probably not as good. It basically is a bunch of astronauts trying to explore and all the bad things that happen to them while doing it.

That's about all I can say w/o giving too much away. I recommend it for anyone craving some sci-fi. It isn't spectacular, but it's pretty good.

You should consider watching different types of genre of anime then, Eva was your basic the world is going to end try to save it anime, while cowboy bebop was your crazy bounty hunter with a dark past anime. You could try a more crazy anime like Baccano! Which is basically about (in a nut shell);

I agree. I don't know how anyone can watch a single anime and say that it's not possible to enjoy other anime. That's like watching Citizen Kane and stating that it's not possible to enjoy another movie because they're "not as good." Anime is a rather awkward beast because at first, we consider it one genre, but then you realize that it's similar to movies with its genres. However, then you realize that while you can usually put anime into genres, there are still many plot archetypes that can then differentiate anime. For example, "harem" is a pretty common aspect to anime, which just means that there's usually one guy and a bunch of women; it doesn't really imply that there's a romantic involvement (love octagon?), but that's usually the case.

Jason Bateman's character is flat.

I find it hard to think of a good role of his after Arrested Development. I thought he was fine in Hancock, but he was more of a side-character.

I normally avoid anime TV series. Time to time I ask in this forum if there are any decent anime series that's worth my attention. It seems little to none so far. Oh I loved Samurai Chanploo too, a direct compliment of Cowboy Bebop. Guaraan Lagaan was good because it's unashamedly stupid and entertaining.

Why don't you just go out and look for anime then? Just go to AniDB, look up an anime that you enjoy and check out some of the series that are listed as similar or recommended. There are tons of anime released each season, and it's really not hard to just look at a list (with descriptions) and see what piques your interest. For this anime season (Summer 2013), I've been watching Love Lab (pretty good) and I've been slightly interested in Gin no Saji. There are a few more that I have my eye on, but I haven't gotten around to checking them out.

I'm also patiently awaiting for a few of Spring 2013's shows to come back. I need me some more Yahari Ore no Seishun Rom Com wa Machigatteiru!

Just stop right there. Don't even waste your time with the latter half of that series as it just goes into a downward spiral (tee-hee ) of inanity. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann was always a bit ludicrous as it's somewhat of a mockery of mecha anime, but (to make a Tropic Thunder reference) the latter went "full retard."

I haven't seen the remake yet, but from what I understand, it isn't nearly as campy as the original. That's probably why you see people complain about it... like the person above who said it wasn't nearly as "fun." I can't remember if it was Evil Dead or Evil Dead 2 that had someone chop off their hand and the severed hand chased them around, but that gives you an idea of the silliness. I'm pretty sure that was the sequel though, but it's hard for me to separate them because they both start off the exact same way.

Im on episode 14 of anime series Toaru kagaku no Railgun season 2, really is good the orignal anime A certain magical index season 1/2 are better but the way the stories intertwine really is a nice aspect of this whole series.

Porky's - 7/10: As a fan of raunchy comedies, it might come as a surprise that I hadn't seen this movie before this past weekend, but when I was looking for something quick to watch, I saw this on my shelf. To be clear, I always find that it's a bit harder to review these older movies, because they always represent their time period. In other words, what's funny then may not be funny now, and I think there was a bit of that in Porky's. However, the movie certainly had quite a bit of juvenile laughs, but I guess I didn't care so much for the titular plot of the movie: the conflict with Porky's. When it comes to bothersome, backwoods antagonists, I guess I prefer the more bumbling type like Buford T. Justice from Smokey and the Bandit.

I'm watching To Aru Kagaku no Railgun S as well. I didn't list it because it's a Spring 2013 anime.

I actually had a harder time getting through the first Railgun series because of the very heavy shoujo-ai element (lesbian overtones for anyone not "down with the lingo"). It doesn't really add anything to the plot, and rather than being amusing in a silly way, it ends up being creepy. However, they seemed to have toned down quite a bit throughout S, and I'm really glad that they've added in more Touma. My favorite parts of Railgun have always been his run-ins with Mikasa.

Unfortunately, I haven't finished To Aru Majutsu no Index yet. I started watching it a long time ago, but I got so bored after the fight with sword-girl that I turned it off. I started watching it again after I finished the first Railgun series; I was able to make it past sword-girl and creepy-possessed Index, but I just haven't gotten around to finishing it yet. It would be nice as there have been a few references in Railgun that I don't understand.

Saw The Heat over the weekend. Was prepared for 2 hours of chick-flick torture, but it turned out of be a surprisingly hilarious movie!

Sandra Bullock plays a nerdy, socially awkward, know-it-all FBI agent (seems to be a theme for her) that is trying to impress her boss for a promotion. She's working on a case and butts heads with Melissa McCarthy, who plays a slobby, street smart, vulgar street detective.

If you like movies like Step Brothers or The Other Guys, you'll love this. McCarthy got a few belly laughs out of me 8.5/10

I thought it was gonna be an awful chick flick, but the plot has a dark undercurrent. I was pleasantly surprised and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Yeah! My cousins were able to sneak me into Porky's at the drive-in when I was a little kid. It was a double-header that played with Taps and oddly they played Porky's first, which was great because I fell asleep right as the opening for Taps started. I've had a soft spot for Porky's ever since.

Cool Hand Luke - 7/10: Kind of a weird movie. I liked it, but it seems to be a bit of a mish-mash of styles. It's kind of like the Birdman of Animal House, or Shawshank of the Nerds. A prison film, but with the heart of a frat house comedy. Very odd. Newman was really good and there were many great sequences in the movie, but on the whole it felt a bit disjointed. Still fun overall though.

I guess that's one of those interesting differences between time periods. I didn't find there to be much nudity at all, but there were definitely some quick shots of male genitalia (tallywacker? ) during the hooker set-up that I didn't expect. Although, I do find that good sex comedies are pretty rare as most of them are too weak or just too strong. My latest favorite is probably Sex Drive, and that's a few years old.
