The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness: 9/10
Revisiting: The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness | The COMP Magazine

Documentary on Japanese animation company Studio Ghibli and the company founders:
Filmmakers Hayao Miyazaki (left) and Isao Takahata (right) and producer Toshio Suzuki (middle).

It follows them as they work to release two films simultaneously, The Wind Rises (directed by Miyazaki) and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (directed by Takahata).

When you think Studio Ghibli, you think of legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki.

When Miyazaki retired in 2013, the company almost closed down in 2014.
(This was not in the documentary but on Studio Ghibli's wiki page.
Also from the wiki, Miyazaki has come out of retirement for one last film with a 2021 release date.
He's aged 79 now  )

Greyhound on Apple TV+ is surprisingly good. Tom Hanks is the captain of a destroyer battling U-Boats while guarding a convoy across the Atlantic. It's probably the best movie I've seen with submarines in it since The Hunt for Red October. 9/10!

The Old Guard 7/10
It isn't bad but it isn't great either. The fight scenes are well done and Charlize Theron is great in it like everything else she is in but the movie drags a bit here and there. Netflix

Speaking of Charlize Theron
Fury Road Black and Chrome edition 10/10
Just picked up the High Octane Collection when it was on sale for $25 a couple day ago. The biggest con I can say to the Black and Chrome edition is after 10 mins or so you just get use to it being in black and white and that aspect looses it's neatness. It is beautiful in color and is beautiful in BW. I had planned to just watch the first 30 mins just to check it out but ended up watching the whole thing again. And now I'm sitting here rewatching the redlettermedia review of it again.

wut wut??

.. i am perplexed. i LIKE B&W, but cannot understand why, of all films, Fury Road should be the one released in B&W.

i tried, and failed, to subject myself to The Big Chill - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085244/

it is terribly mundane, tedious, boring. There is a good reason why, it's supposed to be that, the characters - who once were young hippies - have now become normal, integrated adults, OH SHAME OH DEPRESSION, and guess wut, they got problems.
I suspect that the reason why this film was successful back in its time, was due to the smashingly good soundtrack, if not that, the 80s must have been a very sensitive time, as two exes talking about failing marriages isn't really what we would consider interesting content, today.
would not recommend.
This was back when Jeff Goldblum sucked as an actor, before he changed into suck-but-funny. Although, pretty much every character sucks, in this film.

boring/10 - just watch The Fly instead.

instead, i watched a good 3/4ths of .. uh .. wassitcalled .. oh yeah, Tangerine - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tangerine_(film)

film shot on iPhone 5s, apparently, but you wouldn't know.
Story of a group of trannies; one particular transvestite has just come out of prison, and in the first 30 sec of the film finds out his "boyfriend"/pimp has been cheating (horror) with a woman!
So, said trannie goes looking for him to give him an asswhoppin. It doesn't go well.

Surreal drama/comedy/drama, the main draw is that you get to ogle people who are really trash and make fun of them and condemn them deep inside your soul, but in the end it's really a failry typical drama of wanting to belong; also, you would need some sort of connection to the characters, which .. i'm not really sure how that would happen, unless you happen to be a wild side aficionado yourself.

decent film that is severely limited in appeal by its subject matter. 6.5/10

I think its supposed to appeal to people who can identify with the characters, not the general public.
If you're middle aged and have been thru a divorce and are struggling to find yourself or reinvent yourself, its relevant. I am middle aged and never been married and cannot relate to the characters.

Daddy's Home: 6.5/10 - Some funny parts. It's Will Ferrell (along with Wahlberg) so you either like him or not. He cracks me up so I found it entertaining. It was a good family film, my daughter and wife enjoyed it enough so I was happy.

Daddy's Home 2: 5/10 - Not as funny. Mostly annoying. A funny part or two but that was it. Daughter and wife still liked it so I was cool with it.

Screenplay didn't seem to have the proper structure for a compelling film. It was more like non-stop "this is happening now, DO THIS NOW ... OK now THIS is happening, do something else now. Where did it go? OMG now this is happening!" Kind of exhausting.

Hanks wrote the screenplay himself. Probably would be better if it went back into the oven a bit longer.

Hanks is a big fan of mechanical typewriters, so I bet he doesn't have the advantage / convenience of computer word processing software.

Greyhound - 7/10. Serviceable but rather short on character development. Action kept coming so few dull moments. Think another half hour of story would have been an upgrade. Nice to see them showing the struggle it was to utilize even cutting edge technology (radar/sonar) and worry about fuel consumption and munitions opposed to other films where everybody has an unlimited supply.

Clockers would be a 10 / 10 if it weren't for the completely inappropriate music.
As such, its only a 9 / 10.

Clockers - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112688/

I had ignored this film as i figured it was going to be the same fight the power shit as every other film he's made; here, for example, is the trailer:
But it turns out Clockers is not only an entertaining police film, but also has some weight on the social aspect side o' things. Pretty decent performances by everyone, with Harvey Keitel taking the crown - as always.

7/10 - it's ok.

The Old Guard - 7.5/10 - Definitely worth a watch and ends with a clear intent to nurture a sequel, which I'd definitely watch. Entertaining.

Dark (Netflix series) - 8.5/10 - A mindfuck show with sci-fi roots. It can drag at parts but that's because they really try to tie so many things together. The ending is kind of satisfying which is rare for these types of shows. It's German and I watched it dubbed with subtitles on. Quite often the two differed so it's good to have both on IMO. Definitely need to binge this as it's quite complex so you can't put it down and pick it up months later without needing a debriefing.

Howl's Moving Castle: 7/10

71777.jpg

Japanese animated film by Studio Ghibli.
(English subtitles)

Much like Ghibli's Totoro, 'Kiki's Delivery Service' and Porco Rosso, this film is geared towards kids.

It's about a castle that moves that belongs to a wizard named Howl.
A young lady is cursed by a witch to being an old lady and seeks refuge in Howl's castle as a housekeeper.

it is the 3rd highest grossing film in Japan, behind Titanic  and Spirited Away (another Studio Ghibli film)
