Goliath on Amazon Prime is frigging epic. I'm talking Breaking Bad good. It's only got one season of 8 episodes. I'm on episode 3 and it has been fan-friggin-tastic!

Billy Bob Thorton is killing this role.
Maybe I'll actually use my Amazon Prime streaming for the first time in like forever...

i watched Silence.

it started magnificent. the quality of the production and photography is magnificent. i like the word magnificent.

the lead is not (Kylo Ren) adam driver, but rather the much weaker andrew garfield. driver gets the first 20 minutes, and his character has dept, nuance. garfield's character is "i'm crying, can't you see i'm crying? i'm gonna cry even harder".

the story seems intriguing but ends up being rather bland and waaay too long. by midway through the film, i got bored of looking at the wood grain of the buildings and started to expect stuff from happening.

in the end, it's a self important story of some idiot priest who doesn't manage to get much done.

9/10 -> 7/10 -----> 6/10

The Man In The High Castle, Season 2: 8/10

Fairly tight writing, with only small plot holes, and excellent performances. I wonder what the budget of this series is. Very well done. High production value.

BTW, It was kind of interesting seeing all those Battlestar Galactica actors in there though. I guess it makes sense since season two was shot in Vancouver. And it was interesting to see the small town bus driver from The Sweet Hereafter as Frau Silvia.

Logan: 8/10

Lots of gore, Wolverine being bad ass, just a good solid action movie. There is quite a bit of downtime that seemed a bit pointless as to purely just extend the movie without adding much. I thought the plot was fine, good enough to steer the movie in the right direction but some of it I found a bit odd. It's easily the best of the solo Wolverine movies, highly recommended.

I only watched it because of Billy Bob and I am glad I did. The whole show is good. Acting all around is good. OK, not Breaking Bad great but pretty damned close.

I just watched episode 4 and the awesomeness continues!

I can't say it any other way. This was the role that Billy Bob was made for. He absolutely is killing it. And the entire supporting cast is more than adequate.

I've sat and watched the first three episodes so far today and am really into it. It has been in my queue for awhile and I just wanted to thank the other couple posters that finally got me to watch it.

Forgot to come in here after I watched Logan opening day lol.

Logan: 9.5/10. I'd say it was very nearly a perfect superhero movie. The action was well thought out and believable and the characters were at least above average. Probably having Jackman and Patrick Stewart work together again really helped it out.

Kong Skull Island: 4/10? Maybe lower. I love stupid action films, but this really didn't work for me. I never cared about the characters, a lot of the violence didn't seem to fit the tone of the scenes before or after, and they wasted the acting skill of all their huge names. Especially Samuel Jackson, his character never seemed to justify his motivation. Maybe I need to watch it with friends in a less serious way, but I really didn't like it.
Good things though: CGI was great, girl was attractive.

Moana - 9/10 - I think Disney has another hit on their hand. The animations in this movie are "holy shit!" incredible. I loved the setting and characters in this movie, other than the crab. Something about the whole crab scene I just didn't like, including the song. I don't think it's on Finding Nemo's level which I consider a 10/10, but it is almost pushing on the door.

Doctor Strange - 8/10 - I liked this movie quite a bit. I did not know anything about Dr. Strange other than seeing him in the MVC video games. I thought his name was "Strange" because he was weird prior to watching it. I think in general my favorite super hero movies are when they show how they become the super hero, and this was one of those. As weird as the movie was I still really liked it.

Agree.
Samuel L Jackson's character was straight out of that crazy colonel from Apocalypse Now.
hell, his scenes could have been the trailer for the re-make of that movie.

felt like I wasted 2hrs of my life.

Agree on the crab scene. I don't understand why so many people liked that part. I get that it was an homage to David Bowie, but it was out of place.

Hacksaw Ridge - I'm not really sure what to rate this. The actual story its based on is interesting but the actual movie just didn't do it for me. I think one thing was the casting. The actors just seemed out of place and goofy for their roles. The other thing was all the blood and guts. I get that war is ugly and messy but not sure i needed to see so much of it. And the 2 things i mentioned were so jarring when put together too. The cast seemed like it was for a comedy and then they threw them into a gory action/war movie

"Disorder"

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4085084/

Excellent French crime drama, now released with English subs.

Vincent is a soldier with PTSD who while waiting reassignment hires on to protect the wife and child of a wealthy (dirty) Lebanese businessman while he's out of town trying to pay his suppliers. Despite the apparent tranquility of the immense mansion and property, Vincent perceives the external threat.

A focused vision of the stress of the hostage threat, the nature of the people willing to take it on and PTSD. Don't look for witty conversation here. The film recalls Thomas Hobbes, in that the violence is nasty, brutish and short. Not for squishy-eyed liberals who hope everything will be OK.

One item of interest is that such a focused direction is the work of a female director, Alice Winocour who can setup and deliver mayhem with the best of the males in this field. Loved it.

I haven't seen it yet but since it's a Mel Gibson movie, if you you've ever seen any of his other movies that involve battles, you know they are going to be gruesome.

Hacksaw Ridge wasn't any graphic than any of the recent war movies in the past 20+ years or so. It's right in line with Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawk Down, We Were Soldiers, Fury, Lone Survivor, etc. I can see his comment on casting though. I am not a fan of the main guy who played Spiderman in one of the recent reboots, and I kept waiting for Owen Wilson to come out from behind Vince Vaughn, but I think they both did a great job in this movie and played the roles very well.

Yeah. Parts of the movie were sappy and sentimental. Definitely appealing to ladies that liked The Help. The horrific gore didn't really feel like the same movie.

"in dubious battle"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4411618/

In the California apple country, nine hundred migratory workers rise up "in dubious battle" against the landowners. The group takes on a life of its own-stronger than its individual members and more frightening. Led by the doomed Jim Nolan, the strike is founded on his tragic idealism-on the "courage never to submit or yield." Published in 1936, In Dubious Battle is considered the first major work of Pulitzer Prize-winning author John Steinbeck.

James Franco

Matt Rager (screenplay) (as Matthew Rager), John Steinbeck (novel)
Stars:
Nat Wolff, James Franco, Vincent D'Onofrio |

i'm really busy with work, so i have not had a spare 2h to watch a single film. but i regularly enjoy a youtube video series, if that's ok with your lot.

i really like Historia Civilis, a year-by-year (mostly) analysis of the history of the roman empire .. with far more detail that you'd get from your average history book. and with some really interesting insights into the main players.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCv_vLHiWVBh_FR9vbeuiY-A

i would rate this a solid 7/10, with it being released fairly regularly, with a substantial chunk of good quality content each time; somewhat limited in the audience it can reach, but really great for history buffs .. and people who want to understand the world.
if by "the world" you mean europe.

which you should, you ignorant, steak eatin', ten-gallon-hat wearing barbarians.

Looks interesting, Looks it would work as a MP3 audio series as well. For those commutes :)

The Intervention - 3/10

This movie started out very bad, not much is explained and at first it just seems like a group of uninteresting friends just getting together at a summer house for a vacation. Me and the GF were really close to turning it off 30 minutes in but it does become watchable midway through. Besides a couple minor chuckles the movie was a flat out bore fest. I don't even really know what the point or message of the movie was. The overall plot also made very little since. I was stunned when I looked at the RT score afterwards and saw this got an 80%.... what the hell?

Power Rangers:
If you watched the original series, or are watching the movie with people who did 10/10
Sure it's a modern take on the series; it's not perfect and it has holes and less than perfect writing but it's just so much fun.

You've got the rangers, same basic backstory and lore, an OG villain, and reasonable characters. Everything comes together and it's AMAZING. I always thought clapping and whistling at a movie was weird but there was just so much energy and hype going through the packed theatre that I couldn't help myself. :D

If you're watching it just as a movie 8/10
All the good above still applies (and there's more below) but this is what got the -2.

The movie quite literally starts with a terrible joke. The pacing is a bit off for the entire first half, and the writing is pretty basic at first too. (And honestly the entire movie is simple. Rangers punch bad guys) But watching this movie I cared more about the characters than I did in most other superhero movies in a long time. Most of the movie is cliche but that doesn't really take away from it unless you expect a serious "critic" kind of movie. Power Rangers wasn't on the un-serious level of stuff like Kong or Pacific Rim though (like I expected it to be) it actually had substance. I really liked it.

I never liked Power Rangers even a little. I was the target age group when it came out, but I absolutely hated it and hated that my friends liked it.

A guy where I work was a huge Power Rangers fan as a kid. He hated the new movie and told everyone not to watch it.

I'm confused.

The Crown - 9/10

I only checked it out because John Lithgow got a Golden Globe for his role. Since I'll give anything he's in a fair shot I sat down to watch an episode and was promptly glued to my couch for the duration. God damn was this thing well made. Supposedly Netflix spent $130M on it and it is better written, cast, acted, and shot than the vast majority of feature films with that budget but only a fraction of the run time. The story is complex, personal, and compelling. Lithgow's Churchill is simply fucking amazing. Not only for his usually portrayed strengths but for his many weaknesses.
