Though leaving politics and "who did it" out of it, the shock at seeing those pictures in a way reminds me of seeing the first pictures of the WTC. Aside from everything else, it's a hugely iconic building, one of those that one kind of assumed would be there one's whole life, unchanged. (And just as with the WTC its news I first encounter via pictures on the internet).

At least there's not going to be the associated level of loss of life in this case, of course. Hopefully maybe none at all?

post-fire forensics is generally quite precise at tracking down the origins of nearly any kind of fire. Down to a single oily rag in a trashcan that would have been consumed, most likely.

Also consider how that massive hundred-thousand acre fires in CA can always be tracked back to a single campfire.

Sure however Notre Dame was also in an increasing state of disrepair which of course increases the risk of something like this happening. I forget what the exact tab of work needed was but I think it exceeded 100M euro. They had gotten some money a few years ago and started some of the most urgent work.
