Why did they fire him for calling a woman a garden tool?

The word you're looking for is "hoe", nimrod.

The word you're looking for is "sarcasm", dingleberry.

wrongful termination suit!!!

Over what? Most businesses make it a requirement before hiring that you agree to their sexual harassment policies (this class in particular is just a yearly class they make everyone attend for insurance purposes), my company's policy in particular states that termination can and will happen - calling someone a whore falls under this policy.

He didn't do anything wrong.. it was training. She asked what he thought, and he answered honestly. It would be like if a professor gave me an F in discussion format class because I gave an answer he thought was wrong.

that gal in the video wasn't an employee so, he just gave his opinion. This is why I won't allow stupid HR people into my company.

Smart HR people though, ones who get natural human behavior and can respond compassionately are very valuable.

Overly PC or not, what kind of moron says that at work? Yes, it's dumb that you would get fired over that (IMHO), but anyone with half a brain who wants to keep his job KNOWS that's not something you say in a sexual harassment training class.

She came to this one guy - and asked him about a skit we watched about a girl who was talking about her sex life in the workplace - he responded with "I think she's a ho".

lol - he got terminated on the spot. :p

I have a mandatory 3 hour sexual harrassment training session on Tuesday. I am definitely going to watch what I say after reading this thread.

I think it is pretty retarded that he got fired, especially since he made a comment about somebody's "personality" on a freaking video. Where does one draw the line? Can you not talk to a work buddy about a movie you saw and make the statement that some character was "a ho"?

Personally I wouldn't have said what the guy said - well actually I may have - but to get fired over that is just totally bizarre. I bet he could get a wrongful termination lawsuit because no employee or otherwise "real" person was the "victim" of the perceived sexual harassment. I hardly see making a comment about some fictional character in a video as reasonable grounds for termination.

is it possible the guy who was fired had received prior warnings for unprofessional behavior? It's a bit hard to judge the situation without more background information. If the guy was genuinely ignorant - maybe he comes from a very sexist background, where men talk about women like that - then perhaps it is a bit unfair that he be fired on the spot. Maybe he could have been given some coaching on professional behaviour. Or maybe he was "the class clown" and joking around. If that is the case, it seems like he is being made an example of, in order to demonstrate to all other employees how seriously sexist language is taken at that workplace. Then again, if he has already received warnings on his language, and he was blatanlty and knowlingly violating company policy, then that is a sign he is not willing to adopt a manner of professionalism in the workplace, and if that is the case perhaps he would be better suited finding work elsewhere.

Another possibility - the managers had other issues with the guy, and his comments were just the excuse they needed to fire him.

Context is everything. If this guy had made that comment around the water cooler, probably nothing would have happened. By doing so publicly, to the HR person, at the HR meeting specifically about sexual harassment, he gave the company no other choice but to terminate him with cause on the spot. This guy could have been the manager's "golden child" and they still would have had no other choice but to fire him.

Maybe there was a reason they were having a sexual harrassment training class. Maybe because there was a problem at the workplace? Not to mention, how did they know he didn't mean a HOE? You couldn't tell by someone just speaking. He could've just meant she was a tool, meaning she was a tool in the movie? Like every actor? :)

Did you fail reading comprehension in school. The point is - it's inappropriate to call someone a whore in the workplace, or any other offensive name, no matter what the situation. Again - it goes back to the hostile work environment.
Yes... if the roles were reversed, would it still be considered creating a "hostile" environment?

EDIT: No need for your personal attack Ryan.

exactly what i said, but he hasn't given me an answer ;)

just wondering, how PC are most of the places in Australia?
