Note to self....attempt small scale recipe BEFORE crock-potting

It's not that bad, but I'm definitely going to have to add something afterward to give it more taste. Also probably should have cooked the ground beef beforehand to get rid of a fair amount of grease (I used 80% lean since it was on sale 🙁) So now I have to use a strainer instead, which will work some... just not very well.

Well, here's to learning to cook. At least I'll be fed, granted it won't be particularly delicious like last time 🙁 Maybe I can resurrect it still - ATOT chefs are encouraged to respond with ideas 😛

I mostly use mine to cook deer meat. I've never cooked ground meat in it before, but it can't possibly be as good as chunks of whole stew meat cooked to extreme tenderness for about 9 hours. I'd say lose the ground meat next time.

I just imagine that putting ground beef in a crock pot with anything will turn out badly. Maybe if it was at least partially cooked beforehand you could do something with it.

indeed. cook separately, mix later. now i have like 10lbs of food that i need to force down 😛 (its a 1gal crock pot, IIRC)

Ground beef is not a prime candidate for a crock pot, imho.

Whole meat cuts that would benefit from the tenderizing, flavor releasing process of long slow cooking are. Ground beef is more for a quick fry, having already been "processed" to hell and back in the grinder.

Yeah, you want to put in tough cuts of meat - the crockpot makes them tender. Look for any kind of "roast" cut at the grocery store.

My wife has this incredible recipe for beans in the crock pot. I have no idea where it is now, but I'll bug her about it when she gets here tomorrow.

Google.

I make beans quite regularly in the Crock Pot. There are lots of good recipes out there.

When I make chili, I use ground beef, ground pork and ground chicken/turkey (along with stew meat). It cooks for 24 hours and I have zero problems.

There are no problems with using ground meats in your crock pot, you just need to know what you're making and plan accordingly.

You should brown your ground beef on medium high heat in a skillet before adding it to the crock pot. A crock pot can slow-cook ground beef, but it needs to be properly cooked and strianed. Potatoes soak up grease easily. It probably wouldn't be so severe if it were a pot roast simply because of surface area.
