I had two root canals during Xmas. Everything was going fine until the dentist started manually "drilling" out the dead nerve. When she got to the bottom, I don't think I got enough numbing shot cause a sharp nerve pain shot up my brain. The next pain I felt was when I saw the bill. Haven't had any cavity for 3 yrs. Not sure if the regular checkup, brushing, flossing would've prevented it.

Went to dentist maybe 2-3 times every 5-10 years as a kid. Luckily didn't need braces though I could use it to fix an overbite. Still have my teeth. Best recommendation my hygienist gave me a few years back was to get a sonic care toothbrush or electric toothbrush. That thing rocks. Also floss occasionally 1-2 times/week.

Reminds me, I gotta find a dentist down here since I moved last spring.

As for the x-rays, you don't have to get them every time, just say you don't want them (it's probably cheaper too). At least I could at my last dentist.

I agree--take care of your teeth. I wish my parents taught me better when I was younger. I am paying the price now. But I still rarely floss. Usually nothing comes off when I do and one time I detached my crown so I'm not too inclined to do so.

Same here. I struggle with flossing as well.... 🙁

Did you ever have any cavities before you needed a root canal? Or was it just out of the blue?

I'm 29 and haven't had any cavities yet. Haven't been to a dentist in about 8 years. Brush once or twice a day (usually twice), and almost never floss unless I have something stuck in my teeth.

I also don't drink soda or eat/drink much stuff with corn syrup in it.

I was just like you when I was in my 20s. Yes, I've had cavities from when I was a kid. Started going to the dentist again in my mid 30s, have had a couple deep cleanings because of deep pockets around my teeth but that has been under control for a few years now. Mostly 2s and 3s.

No, this was brought on by my dentist, she kept saying, you have decay on these two molars and we need to address that so I finally had her do the work and put crowns on those teeth, they are right next to each other and lo and behold the back one was really sensitive to cold and hot after. I have been delaying going to have a root canal because I know what they are like and it didn't hurt that bad. Well, about 2 weeks ago I was driving to work and the throbbing was like OMG!!! I need to see someone NOW!!!

Anyone need a good Endontist in north county San Diego, hit me up for a referral. This guy is good.

I've had good luck using a waterpick. I fill it with 1/4 mouthwash and 3/4 water. Go between all your teeth and you'll be surprised the amount of shit that thing will flush out.

So when are they going to apply stem cells to teeth so that if you have any problems they can just yank it and plant another one that grows like teeth normally do? Or maybe they can genetically modify it to be like sharks where we just keep growing teeth and lose ones regularly.

Bullshit!

I didn't go to the dentist between 1991 and 2003, and never had one cavity in that time, but as soon as I go in, I have 4.

Scam is what it is...

Gotta find one that you trust. Easier said than done though. Went to a new dentist of a recommendation from a friend. Told me that I was in the early stages of gingivitis and that I needed to do a deep cleaning which they could pencil me in the same day. Cost? $3k. Yeah fuck off.

$3k? That's insane. I think I paid a $50 deductible but once I paid that it didn't cost me anything.

I've had that deep cleaning done a couple times. Now I go regularly for cleanings to keep that in check.

What were your deepest pockets when the measured?

It was a while ago so I dont remember clearly but I think 7-8? Went to another dentist and he told me that I was okay and that Im too young to be having that and just to start flossing, which I didnt really do before.

That's pretty bad. I had a couple that were that deep. Do your gums bleed when you brush/floss?

I've had three root canals, they're not that bad. Unfortunately I never got the final crowns put on any of them, and the enamel that was left on two has pretty much cracked off. Four missing teeth, four cracked teeth, the three root canals, and two chipped ones, BMX did wonders for my smile.

You're either getting ripped off or you have really nasty hygiene along with horrible genetics if you had deep cleaning done couple of times.

The length of time between them was probably 10 or so years. And I don't have really nasty hygiene. To kiss me on the mouth is to kiss God... seriously.

root canals are nothing. now getting your wisdom teeth yanked your of your head is a different story.

Oh, I really like when they have to cut the wisdom tooth almost in half, and then break it the rest of the way. That crunching, grinding and snapping that you can hear inside your ears is awesome!!!

Been over 3 years for me. I need to go again I guess. Just a hassle, don't like doing it, and making time around my work schedule isn't the easiest thing either. Plus up until recently I wasn't sure where a good dentist was around here as the one I used to go to had a heart attack 🙁

I've had my wisdom teeth out and they had to break up the lowers, but I don't remember much of it. And what I do remember didn't bother me as I didn't care. I was drugged up and happy 😛

On a side note, has anyone ever done sedation dentistry? They offered that but it costs $25 extra, which I would have to pay, so I declined.
