Take care of your teeth. Get them cleaned professionally at least once or twice a year, brush and floss after meals and before bed.

Go to the dentist regularly for checkups.

Root canals are not fun.

That is all. :colbert:

i need to get denture's. i lost a lot of my teeth for some reason at a young age (think it was some meds i took. mom said i was on some experimental drugs that was not released). I had many on my right side knocked out (far to easy in my opinion) in hapkido.

A couple of years ago I went to the dentist for the first time in 30 years.

No cavities.

Did you ever have any cavities before you needed a root canal? Or was it just out of the blue?

I'm 29 and haven't had any cavities yet. Haven't been to a dentist in about 8 years. Brush once or twice a day (usually twice), and almost never floss unless I have something stuck in my teeth.

I also don't drink soda or eat/drink much stuff with corn syrup in it.

Got mine cleaned this morning.

I just wish dental insurance wasn't such a scam around here... Expensive considering most dentists around here don't accept cheaper plans my employer offers... I dropped it altogether 4 years ago and have been paying out of pocket since.

I've learned a lot about dental health from my dog. The vet told me some breeds need to have their teeth cleaned more than others....and that different dog foods make a difference. Before we switched his food to something else, his teeth took about 8-12 months before he needed to be sedated and cleaned...now he's going on 2+ years without a teeth cleaning. I'm sure humans are the same...just depends on the breed and eating habits. :D

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now.

I agree--take care of your teeth. I wish my parents taught me better when I was younger. I am paying the price now. But I still rarely floss. Usually nothing comes off when I do and one time I detached my crown so I'm not too inclined to do so.

There is no "or" in this scenario. Brushing and flossing will not compare to a good cleaning and checkup.

Bullshit!

I didn't go to the dentist between 1991 and 2003, and never had one cavity in that time, but as soon as I go in, I have 4.

Scam is what it is...

I brush twice a day, use mouthwash, and get a dental cleaning/x-rays about once a year (though my dentists says you should do it every six months). I can't remember the last time I had a cavity, it's been many years.

I get discouraged from good oral care by the shittiness of dentists. I know it should be the opposite.

It's just that every time I have work done, they just make shit worse.

'Hey, have a root canal! Whoops, we didn't seal your root canal properly, now it's infected and it looks like your tooth rotted and broke...hey, now that we pulled it, actually, that tooth's root was still intact. Man, that sucker sure was hard to pull out of there, LOL!'

Add:

Wisdom teeth that I'm not sure needed to be pulled...when I went through military enlistment, they X-rayed all of us, and mine looked totally fine/had plenty of room. They were not shy about yanking your wisdom teeth during BCT if they thought they were going to give you problems. A few years later, the wisdom teeth that were already fully grown in are supposedly 'crowding' and causing some of my dental issues...

Drilling cavities and filling them like a migrant worker doing bodywork on rusted out '79 Chevy pickup. Yeah, just slather that tooth-bondo on there, thanks. You can always go back and dremel on that tooth for thirty minutes to remove all the excess. Oh wait, I still can't bite down; fuck you.

I am a dental-defeatist at this point. Sigh.

The x-rays are the reason I don't go to the dentist. Why the hell do they have to fry my brain with x-rays every 6 months? No other doctor gives x-rays for the hell of it.

I just had a root canal for the first time and yes they suck.

I had one cavity that was pretty deep and was filled 3 years or so ago. The filling cracked and exposed the tooth. It was killing me anytime I had hot or cold liquids and food. Finally broke down to see the dentist. Dentist said I had to get the root canal and then a crown since the cavity was near the roots and another filling would most likely have the same issues.

No problem, I went and had the root canal done the next day. Holy crap that procedure sucks. They numb you and everything but you have to keep your jaw open wide for an hour or so. (they put a wedge thing in your mouth for you to bite down on to keep the jaw open) My jaw is still sore, been a couple weeks since the procedure.

The pain was not bad at all. Just took ibuprofen for a few days. They prescribed better stuff but didn't need it.

Then a week later I went back to my regular dentist to get fitted for the crown. That was almost as bad. They have to drill and shape your tooth for the crown to fit on top of it. Then they have to take several molds to get the shape right. Then they fit you with a temporary crown until the real one gets made. That seemed like it took an hour in the chair as well.

I have to go back next week to get the permanant crown. (temp crown already came off, damn it this sucks)

So yes boys and girls take care of your teeth.

A good dentist will only take a full set of x-rays once every 2-4 years. They'll only do x-rays in between on a specific tooth that might need work.

Another vote for going to the dentist at least once a year for a cleaning and exam. They'll catch problems earlier, and need to do less to fix them. Scraping some gunk away instead of a filling, or a small filling instead of a deep one that will eventually lead to a crown or root canal.

And do brush daily.
