The edge IS THE BEZEL. And a huge one at that. So you get a strange thin and tall display. It looks nice on promo materials, practicality is down the drain.

They don't get made because functionally they end up being a bit crap, they are physically hard to make and they end up being stupidly fragile.

There isn't some conspiracy to prevent you getting the phone you want, it's just the phone you want doesn't work very well.

Reminds me of all the sci-fi movies and television shows that feature transparent glass displays or holographic displays that you have to gesture all over the place to use. Yes, they look futuristic, but I doubt they'd be comfortable to use or even look at (though if you could control the opacity, it could be useful) .

2018, 2019 and beyond and the continued progression of smartphone designs beyond just 'a tweak on same'ol' WILL happen, even with you holding your breath insisting it won't.

As people already explained - the problem isn't just with the technology, or the design, but with the usability. You are (very passionately) attacking a strawman.

Even if such a phone is feasible technologically, it has implications on usability.

It might make the phone much more fragile, it might also hinder usability as you actually hold the phone in your hand(s) and you don't want the screen to register touches the places you're holding the phone (which happens to me from time to time on my z3c).

These problems don't really exist with a monitor, as they are usually stationary and not held in your hand, from my experience.

I couldn't buy a similar "render" of a 70" flatscreen with no bezel in 2010.

I couldn't agree more. The EDGE is the bezels.
What we have is a 5.5" phone height wise but the width of a 5.3"phone.
The .1" on each side of the phone is practically useless.

They had to have bezel on the bottom so it can house the speakers, camera, etc... They can easily have small bezels up top and bottom to house the necessary components.
I don't hear the Japanese complaining on how to hold the phone with no bezels.

Gorgeous phone on paper. Nearly got one until I read the reviews at the time, which were okay but not great. The camera supposedly wasn't very good, but I don't know if that's a result of the bezel-less design, a cost cutting measure, or both. At least the price came down on the Crystal significantly, though, over time. It wasn't expensive at launch ($150 with a contract) but hard to justify versus the competition unless you really liked the look.

I'm sure some manufacturer will get the nearly bezel-less design without compromising specs, durability, and ergonomics, but it hasn't happened yet. The Crystal was more a showcase for Sharp's design chops than their ability to manufacture an excellent smartphone, but part of the problem was that it didn't get much marketing here as a mid-range phone. It didn't help that it was a Sprint-only phone here, either.

The phone in your render has no side bezel at all so how are they going to attach the screen to the phone?

People didnt complain too much. But thats because nobody bought one.

Note 4 with the proper ROM is nearly a perfect machine. It works with the VR headset (need to mod the VR headset a little), it has microsd, removable battery, iR blaster (which I use nearly everyday since I lose my remote or the gyms/golf club I go to always has something stupid on and if no one is watching I can change the channel. Even got double tap to wake feature working.

No bezels sounds great but won't people be cracking their phones left and right.

The Aquos isn't new, it being a bad phone or not has nothing to do with the minimum bezel.

A Galaxy Note of similar design -or even just the current S7 edge design would be awesome.

I doubt the N6 will be a radical departure, but that's already been discussed.

Some of the complaints about the Aquos were to do with bad call quality and the dodgy placement of the front camera.

Both of which are very much to do with the minimal bezels.

Why should the Note 6 follow the S7 Edge design? You'd end up with 2 devices extremely close to each other. The S7 Edge fulfills the minimal edge/style segment. The Note 6 should focus on being a powerhouse - in productivity, battery, etc. To me that means a flat screen and of course I'll take the smallest bezels I can take - but I don't expect anything significantly smaller than the Note 5 which was already nearly the smallest available.

I agree with you, said so in my first post.

It was merely my hope they'd do an updated edge Note that follows their newer edge design.

It was orginally the Note series where Samsung first experiemented with an edge/non-edge model.

I realize now they've switched that to the S series, but I think it's kind of a shame we can't expect an improved edge Note.

We're talking about the ability to make phone with virtually no bezels and you said it couldn't be done. Who cares if the phone I posted is shitty or not. We're talking about bezels here.
The first pic I posted is of course computer generated...can a phone be made that can look very similar to that picture. Of course.
This phone right here has virtually no side bezels. If they just trim the top and bottom bezels, it could look a lot like the first picture i posted.

It's about time. I always thought Samsung would be one of the first to go USB type C with the Note 5. But maybe they were right to hold off with all the early poorly spec'd cables out there. Since that's less of a problem now, Samsung would be quite behind the times to stick with micro USB again.

completely opposite experience for me. Note 4's have a ton of emmc issues where the built in memory slows down and eventually fails after a period of time. my note 4 was in mint condition cosmetically, never abused, and one day decided to just slow down and fail to boot. no factory reset or flashing of different roms could solve the issue. sold it for parts on ebay.

My galaxy 2, 4, and now 5 have no issues. well the galaxy 5 has some screen banding issues but nothing major.

Bring back the white model. Especially if glass construction is going to stay. I do not understand why they dumped such an iconic color for the Galaxy phones. That white masks fingerprints the best should have been an icing on the cake.
