It's not a killer app because 90% of Note users could care less.

Do not say that... yet.

I tried Oculus Rift at a friend's house. He was actually crazy enough to buy one.

Anyway, he showed me a demo of a roller coaster. Sure, the graphics could still be better, but the feeling it gives is so damn real, I almost fell off the chair screaming WHOOOOAAAA! when I was speeding down....

If they can do anything remotely close with the VR gizmo for the Note 4, that would be awesome. However I doubt that
a)They will make any actual good games taking advantage of the technology
b)The device will be affordable for an average joe.

I really hope that this is wrong. I'm pretty sure the USA always gets the snapdragon, and if this pans out I will be pissed knowing I'm buying the inferior version.
And... I think we've just confirmed why Samsung is keeping mum!

😉

Well I assume that Samsung will "equalize" performance somehow - but their new SOC does look quite impressive compared to Qualcomm's best right now. Realistic reasons why they may not be promoting it:

- Sweetheart deal from Qualcomm as rumored
- Yield issues on 20nm that are limiting supply and Samsung wants to avoid the majority of customers getting a "worse" phone
- Still missing some LTE bands

Looks like $199 for the gear VR shell, and the number of games so far is pretty impressive. IMO the two best devs for DK1 are making launch titles- Titans of space and Darknet. Throw in Oculus Cinema and I'm pretty sure there will be plenty of content on launch day. I'm very excited for the VR since the oculus experience on desktop is very buggy and this has better latency and none of the setup hassle. All they are missing is a minecraft clone to support it.

I've officially switched from telling everyone dying for VR to get the Gear VR, over the DK2. Exciting times.

Yes, I currently have 2 debit cards and 2 credit cards in Google Wallet (2 Mastercard and 2 VISA), You set a default card for tap & pay, or you can select which card to use for payment.
My first attempt at tap & pay was a failure. I was trying to buy a gift card and some other stuff with it, and the payment thingy beeped, so I thought I was good.

However the cashier said she needed to see my credit card because I was buying a gift card. Lucky for me I had my wallet, and paid with a credit card, about five minutes later. Are there any more things like this I should be aware of?

It works best if you open the app while you're in line to get through the PIN screen. Then you can go back to browsing AT or whatever; just unlocking Wallet once keeps the PIN screen away for a while so you don't have to tap-PIN-tap.

I didn't have a problem with that. I got the acknowledgement beep, but the transaction didn't go through. The cashier said it was because I was buying a gift card, and as this was my first time paying buy phone, I had to take her word. I want to know if there are other pitfalls I should be aware of when paying by phone.

Some stores have maximums on tap&pay transactions; others have setups that make you touch the console for credit vs debit etc. afterwards. The wider use of NFC by entitled Apple customers should help iron these issues out for everyone.

Can you give me a ballpark on the maximums?

Then I'll get the thread back on track. Saw my first commercial for the Note 4 during the Jets vs Pack game. I thought it was pretty well done.

The Gear VR is interesting, but I'm not sure $199 is worth it since the biggest cost of the Oculus is likely the display, and since that's already being paid for in the Note 4, I don't see why the shell is $199.

Also, we definitely need a big red version so that finally the View-Master can live up to it's potential!

Am I the only one baffled by them covering the camera on the Note with the GearVR shell? Or is that somewhat translucent plastic part not required? Because blocking the camera makes using it for augmented reality stuff (which to me would be one of the major positive points of integrating a phone/processor into it so that you're not as limited by wires). Just noticed that yeah that part can be left off for that. Still seems like they could've done something better.

I also think a much better thing than the Note Edge would have been a version of the Note 4 with dual cameras specifically intended for the GearVR and augmented reality tools. You could shoot 3D video and see it on the fly. Plus the 16:9 16MP sensors downsampled to 4MP would almost perfectly match the resolution so they could have come up with special video mode for that. It would make for a great "Google Maps" style mapping system where a person could wear it.

Not only that but they'd be able to do a bunch of other things that Samsung loves marketing, would boost panorama shots, would enable stuff like HTC did with One M8's dual sensors.

At least that seems like it would be a lot more interesting of a gimmick to me, and it's not like it'd cost a lot, the sensors Samsung uses are relatively chump change (actually for $199, I'd almost expect that Samsung could've shoehorned a couple of even cheaper sensors, say 4MP or so into the Gear VR itself).

They didn't cover up the camera, in fact they specifically left it uncovered so that you can switch to the camera to see the real world while still wearing the headset.

I wonder if the audio will be comparable to the note 2 (which has very good audio both in term of quality (fidelity) and volume).

It was an awkward commercial. Some of Samsung's adds are cheaky and fun. Some are just smug and awkward. This was more of the latter. There's so much they could advertise and show on the the Note that they don't.

I agree that they need to show more of what the note 4 can do, but I think that will come as we get closer to release day.

Unsurprisingly, the display kicks ass. And oh yes
We measured a 14 percent improvement in display power efficiency between the Galaxy Note 3 and the Note 4, which is especially impressive given that the Note 4 has almost double the number of pixels and therefore much higher processing overhead. The Galaxy Note 4 also has an Ultra Power Saving Mode that lowers the Screen Brightness and also sets the background to Black, both of which significantly reduce display power and can double the running time on battery.
