So... IMO the big winner today was the Note, which will be the king of no-compromises hardware until at least Spring releases.

And who'd have thought the Alpha would arguably beat the i6 in design?

I was never considering an iPhone to begin with, but I agree with you. I may not buy iPhones or have any desire to buy the Apple watch, but I still like to seem them push technological boundaries during their annual reveals because as consumers we benefit when these big companies bring their A game and challenge each other. But today fell far below expectations, from the iPhones to the watch and even the live stream which completely failed on my iDevice and kept crashing safari, this was probably Apple's worst event in recent memory IMHO.

I have to say I originally planned to not upgrade to a flagship. Then I decided I might get the new iphone since it would be larger and I've missed out on 3 years of iOS apps. However, with the Note 4+Gear VR and what I consider the extremely poor showing of the 5.5" iphone I think Note4 + the VR headset is my next setup.

I really had hoped they would do >1080p on a 5.5" phone. I had ,I guess stupidly, hoped for 4x iphone 5 res which would still be even less than the 1440p of the note. I don't know, I really thought Apple would go all out for this release. Oh well, maybe I'll get the next mini ipad to catch up on iOS stuff.

Yes, although I think Apple's NFC plan will blow Google's out of the water, I think it's at least a year away. I'll enjoy the Note 4 until then.

I am kind of late to the party but from the looks of it the Note 3 users will have very little incentive to upgrade to the Note 4? (Which is a compliment to the Note 3)

I'm on a note 3 and will be getting the note 4. Qhd and VR? Hell, I may even get the edge.

I guess it all depends on how much you crave the new technology. I still can't find a compelling reason to upgrade from my Note 2.

I wouldn't if I had the Note 3. Personally, I don't think 1 year of tech advancement is enough to really warrant an upgrade. 2 years at least. Hopefully, microUSB type-C will make it into the Note 5. And maybe Qualcomm's own 64-bit cores? The Snapdragon 808 and 810 aren't that interesting to me, except for the better GPU.

I know we were discussing this in the other thread, but it bears repeating. NFC works on both sides, wherever Apple Pay works Google Wallet also works and vice versa. The more NFC is adopted the more it benefits everyone, not just one side.

Same here - I won't repeat my reasons for the 10X time in this thread, but the Note 4 clears up pretty much all the improvement areas I had about my Note 3.

However, getting a mint Note 3 on swappa for $390 is a pretty great deal IMO.

WTH is this VR goggle thing? It's monstrous looking. (in a very bad way)

Note to self: If trying to win beauty contest don't wear VR goggles- got it!

I was more thinking to wear them for the cool worlds I could explore and great 3d movies I could enjoy. Thank you for opening my eyes and letting me know that the plastic shell on the outside is what I really should be focusing on 🙂

Coming from a Note 2 here, and had planned on a cheap upgrade or moving to iphone as mentioned above... but the VR is enough to tip the scales for me.

So they both work the same way payment wize?

Yes they both use the same technology (NFC) so every terminal that gets setup to work with Apple Pay will work with Google Wallet. It's good for consumers because either side pushing NFC helps the other as well.

Well I'm tempted to go from note 2 to 4. But I want to wait and make sure audio is OK. Two dislike on note 2:
Ssl negotation slow (mail)
fades outside...

If you mean outdoor legibility on your 2nd point, yeah the Note 2 was bad in that respect. The Note 3 was a very big improvement on that front and IMO was the first AMOLED without a glaring weakness.

The Note 3 put up a good showing here, though the S5 was the best. The Note 4 should continue the regular AMOLED improvements and may actually be the phone with the best outdoor legibility as well as finally fixing the remaining color accuracy issues.

I meant does Google act like apple and be the middle man with your credit card information. I will like only having one place having my card numbers instead of many like it is now.

Yes, I currently have 2 debit cards and 2 credit cards in Google Wallet (2 Mastercard and 2 VISA), You set a default card for tap & pay, or you can select which card to use for payment.

So it looks confirmed that the Exynos version is actually using A57 (!!!). This would make it way, way better than the 805, particularly when L drops with full 64-bit support.

(1) Was part of Qualcomm's sweet deal with Samsung that Samsung not brag about being first to implement A57?
(2) Is Andrei the Perseus kernel dev, who's now writing for AT, going to do a piece on this part? His old insistence that it couldn't be 64-bit because of the part number seemed completely sensible.

What? I had just assumed it was the same as the Galaxy Alpha SOC with higher clockspeeds. Even that seemed pretty impressive on Samsung's 20nm process and the first time in a while their own SOC seemed as good if not better than the Snapdragon equivalent.

If it really is the A57, it's amazing they're not talking about it - and maybe you're right, that's why Qualcomm gave them such a sweet deal. But unless it's artificially handicapped, it should have superior performance and better battery life being on 20nm.

I really hope that this is wrong. I'm pretty sure the USA always gets the snapdragon, and if this pans out I will be pissed knowing I'm buying the inferior version.
