If it was just a stupid things said by the other party contest I think it is safe to say that could be won with just quotes from Dubya. The question here is about fundamental beliefs that are being translated into bad legislation. He said what he believed and why he supported the bill he just said it poorly. What he believes hasn't changed, his support of the bill hasn't changed. Republicans having a history of people that have believed similar things (to support broad abortion bans) hasn't changed.

Even the party itself when it lays out its platform refuses to take a stand on exceptions for rape and instead says that if a state banned abortion even in cases of rape that would fall in line with their platform.

I wish the republicans could throw out all of the evangelical, social conservative crap. As much as I'd like fiscal conservatives to fix our issues I am more worried about the strangle hold the social conservatives currently have over the party.

So there is no absolute abortion ban. IT allows states to craft laws consistent with the values and needs of their own citizens instead of forcing values onto them.

And maybe they do not call out exceptions, because the party is not really interested in talking about exceptional cases.

Platforms and conventions are basically big circle-jerks. Republicans are much more interested in calling attention to protecting unborn babies then calling attention to exceptions.

And not a word about an absolute abortion ban. In fact the only time they use abortion is with regard to public funding or subsidies for it, or health plans covering it.

So there is no absolute abortion ban. IT allows states to craft laws consistent with the values and needs of their own citizens instead of forcing values onto them.

And maybe they do not call out exceptions, because the party is not really interested in talking about exceptional cases.

Platforms and conventions are basically big circle-jerks. Republicans are much more interested in calling attention to protecting unborn babies then calling attention to exceptions.

Right on all counts. Which is to say the Republican platform would support an absolute abortion ban if a state passed one. Claiming Republicans as a whole support an absolute ban is taking it a step too far but is about the same as calling pro-choice people pro-abortion which is to say when it comes to abortion the debate is essentially broken.

I do agree party platforms aren't worth much, actions are what truly speaks but in this case we were talking about the platform.

But in that case it was also stated by a celebrity who is not an elected official, unlike Mr Legitimate Rape. The only thing in that list that reaches the same level of stupidity is the guy who thought an island could tip over. And at least in that case he didn't offend a huge portion of the population while saying it, he just proved he's stupid.

It's one thing when someone who happens to align themselves with your party says something stupid, it's another when someone in a position of power within that party says it. Rush alone could fill a list with the horrible shit he's said. Hannity, O'Reilly and the rest of Fox News could fill 100 more lists.
