Most colleges REQUIRE you to have a desktop if not a laptop. Additionally how are you going to post on ATOT or chat on AIM/MSNM/YIM/ICQ?

That's the whole idea, to avoid ATOT, AIM/MSN/YIM/ICQ.

My major will be information systems, which will require some introductory computer science classes. I guess I can't avoid computers, heh.

Should I bring a printer? I only have one at home and I don't want to take that away from my parents, nor do I feel like spending money on buying a new one plus the cost of ink. I believe my school charges printing but I'm not sure.

You can easily go to school without a computer. Anyone who says otherwise spends way to much time on their computer.

I don't foresee myself downloading pr0n on college campus. I'd rather have clean record if you know what I mean. That means I'll either have to download all my porn before I get there, or not watch it at all. Although, I could download porn on a VPN connection...

I screwed up a whole year of college myself by playing games and hanging out with a very sorry excuse for a girlfriend. I paid dearly, but I can't say it wasn't fun getting straight F's. I'm doing ok now in my fifth year.

All you need is a cheap laptop - like one of those low end inspirons. Maybe $500 for that and you can mooch off the computer lab printers - there should always be one open.

totally depends on your major. I guess CS/CE might be a problem, but I could probably get by without a problem studying ME right now

Northern Michigan Univeristy, about an hour from me, requires all students to buy their POS laptops. They are very expensive for what you get. I often talked to a friend who was in her math class but talking on ICQ. It sounds like from her that the whole class d*cked around on the internet during lectures. What stupid idea, and the students most certainly don't learn anything when the professors allow that (hell she said some almost encouraged it, like a "I don't care what you do" attitude).

That's just flat out wrong. At most schools you pretty much need to check your email at least every hour to stay on top of notices and watches, let alone checking assignments, bulletins, etc. online. Without your own computer you'd basically be running to a lab every half hour or always mooching off someone else's computer. Both options are pretty lame.

I intend to take with me to school my decently powerful system, 19" LCD, and 505W 5.1 sound system. It will be fun and I'll make time for schoolwork. :p

I do remember one instance in college where I *had* to have a computer... Sociology 412, research methods. we had to install a program with a crapload of statistics data from various surveys, studies, and censuses (censii?) that we used for a huge chunk of our homework (investigating statistics, formulating theories to explain them, and so on)

A good suggestion would be to leave your computer at home until Thanksgiving. You definitely do not want to be playing games or posting on ATOT when everyone else is making friends.

You can go to school without a computer. You can't do it easily. This isnt high school where you can turn in things handwritten.

You will use a computer for every paper and program that you write. For all the research you do. For much of the communication with your soon to be friends.

You are not going to make any friends by bumming off their comps, because thats what will end up happening.

But all of this is academic, because if you've ever visited ATOT, or you're taking MIS as a major, you'll last a week, maybe two, without your own computer. Then you'll come to your senses.

I disagree. Lots of people with serious self-control issues manage to get through college, or life in general, by avoiding their weaknesses. For example, people who are recovering alcoholics or drug users, who will avoid bars and parties where alcohol is served, in order to ensure they don't fall back into their old ways. It's a form of proactive self-control.

In short, if you lack the self-control to stop playing games, you might be able to get away with using the lab computers IF your college/department has good labs.

Learn some fscking responsibility and self control. You can't survive without a computer.
And learn to get laid, if possible. If you don't care about girls, you're going to need the computer to beat off. Why remove all methods of entertainment?

Hell, even for my Econ classes, using a computer is invaluable. I can check out all of the sites of professors that have previously taught the courses and look at how they explain things with their notes as opposed to my current teacher. You can find old problem sets, lectures, exams, all sorts of stuff that is useful for school.
