If you lack the self-control to limit your gaming, you'll just end up finding some other excuse not to do work (drinking, girls etc.). Save your parents the tuition and forget college.

I'm not really a party person. In fact, I don't even remember the last time I've gone to a party. And girls? Don't really care about them either.

*head explodes in sheer absurdity*

likelihood of you being miserable in college is steadily rising.

This is a really really bad idea. If for no other reason, you'll have to do all-nighers... and who wants to do them in labs, racing against the clock on when they'll be open?

I think not bringing a *printer* to school is a good idea, but not bringing a computer to school is a terrible idea.

You can easily make it. The people telling you that you lack self control are stupid. You obviously have identified it as a distraction and are looking to weed it out. I say do it, there are plenty of comp labs that you can get your work done at, you'll probably spend more time out of your room getting work done or interacting with people instead of sitting in your dorm surfing the net/games/movies. At a modern college campus its easy to get by without a computer of your own, especially if they have good 24hr labs and central printing services.

you know, I can't blame you. I wasted a lot of time on my comp last year and it ultimately ended up being counter productive. Most universities have 24/7 computer labs (you actually NEED to turn in stuff online sometimes, I had professors that exclusively used email for work). You better be using the time you save on girls + booze though.

Bad idea. For all the reasons listed here. The computer lab is not conducive to work. I remember using it when I was a freshman since I didn't live on campus and needed to get something done here and there. Edit a paper, print a paper, etc. Everytime I got there I would run into a ton of people I knew and it would just be a chat fest. Generally this one guy from one of my classes was always there. One day I noticed what he was working on as I was leaving. He was surfing some kind of chat/porn site. I can't believe someone would do that in a computer lab but either way that was the last time I ever went to a computer lab.

If you're staying in the dorms odds are you won't want to use the computer very much your freshman year for gaming. Then again you did proclaim yourself to be kinda gay but that'll change when you get there. You'll go to class and you'll study but in your off time you won't want to play games in the dorm.

I graduated in 2003 and I knew a lot of people who didn't have computers. They either used their friends' computers or used lab computers.

I wouldn't recommend it though, it's very convenient to have your own.

Simple solution: buy a low end computer that isn't capable of playing newer games.

... Wait a minute.

So you're telling us you don't like girls, don't like parties, and aren't going to bring your computer?

You DO realize that out of a 20 credit schedule, you're only ever going to do maybe 60 hours of work, AT THE ABSOLUTE MOST.

With a full 8 hour sleep schedule, that still leaves 32 hours in a week AT AN ABSOLUTE MINIMUM for you to do whatever with. No girls, no parties, no computer, what the fvck are you going to do? Watch American Idol? That's all the girls will let you watch in the common room.

Better solution: Take whatever you have now, remove the 7800GT, and throw in a PCI video card.

Most colleges REQUIRE you to have a desktop if not a laptop. Additionally how are you going to post on ATOT or chat on AIM/MSNM/YIM/ICQ?

for those saying 10yrs ago you didn't need one...yah exactly, 10 yrs ago.

nowadays

handwritten papers won't be accepted
you need to check your e-mail a lot
assignments/lectures/scheduling/excessive amounts of needed information are all online.
It'd be a big waste of time + inefficient studying to go back/forth to a lab. They do tend to be quite busy and I don't know of many that are open 24/7.

Even if you bring a ******/no computer...there'll still be plenty of distractions, so no matter what you will have to develop some self control...and not just place yourself in a box.

---
Your best bet at being productive is to get a cheap laptop, but one that is fairly portable and go to the library.
---

good luck young noobian.

edit:

If you really want to be productive, don't get on facebook.

It depends on how distracting you let them be. I've used my computer at college to write papers, make huge spreadsheets, and code for class. It's also a valuable research tool. And it's all in the comfort of your room. Some computer labs may close at late hours, which is why having the computer in your room is a valuable asset.

Also, how will you possibly survive without your pron? Don't deny it.

Computers are only a distraction if you let them be. Like someone else said, if it's not the computer distracting you, it will be something else if you're worried that much about succumbing. I highly recommend bringing a computer to college, just don't let it take up more of your time than necessary. Get out and do other stuff, but use the computer for schoolwork.

throughout life, there are always going to be distractions.

a lot of times, you're not going to be able to weed them out. I can't ask the sysadmin at my job to block my access to anandtech, for example.

you're really a lot better off in the long run if you simply learn to manage distractions, learn self control, and learn how to focus your attention on projects.

The single-most STUPID idea I've ever heard. You think labs are open until 5AM when you're crunching for that last paper? I think not.

It depends on your major. If you're a CS student, you'll have a hard time without a computer at best.

I'm a math/physics major and while I've only gotten my Associate's degree, I've never used a computer in a math or physics class other than one computer in the physics lab once. From what I could determine from the 4-year school, I wasn't going to have to use one at all.

If you are looking for a distraction from doing work in college, you will find one even if you don't own a computer. If you don't have a computer to play games on, then you will just go down the hall and play on a friends Xbox or something. The issue here is time management and staying focused, not the computer.

Having said that, I think it would be in your best interest to get one. Sure there are labs on campus, and some wil be open 24/7 (depends on the school obviously). However, many are not open that late, and when it's right before a semester break and everyone has papers due, sometimes you may not be able to find a seat in the public labs. Not to mention printer difficulties, labs being closed for maintenance, etc.

I see no reason not to get one, unless you can't afford it. Even then, if all you want is the bare essentials, you can score some pretty good deals on Dell Outlet if you are patient.
