Does anyone find a computer in your dorm more of a distraction than being helpful? I might be too tempted to play games all day. :(

You could always use lab computers.
There is that. But it's still far, far better to have your own system so you don't have to worry about not saving files properly, you always have access to it, you can work on it when you choose, and you don't have to trudge back to your room when finished with it.

If you're worried about games, just go out and put a couple bucks down on something so old and slow there's not a chance in hell it'll run the current generation of games. You just have to worry about compatability with whatever word processing software you need, which isn't a huge stretch.

on that note, uninstall all of them, and leave the game CD's back at home.

I do have an old 400mhz K6-2 box somewhere around here. Maybe I'll bring that instead. I doubt that it will even play flash games.

I wouldn't attempt to go to college without my own computer. Trying to rely on the computer lab is foolish and it can be crowded. Just muster up some will power and limit your gaming.

if you really lack self control, just uninstall all your games and leave the cd's at home.

you can survive without a computer, but having to use the labs 100% of the time can really be a lot of hassle (especially if your college is like mine, where only a handful of labs are open 24 hours) and you'll really get on your roommate's nerves if you leech off his computer.

i tried it for a year. i just had to go to the basement to do some homework

an alternative would be to get a cheap laptop. a celeron-M runs you about $400 these days, has wifi and everything you need but you can't play games.

but still, have more self control.

If you lack the self control to not play games, I don't anticipate you doing very well in college.

There you go! Throw on a clean install of 98 if you're able to, or Linux if that's your choice (don't even think about attempting XP), along with only productivity software and you should be fine. Music, chat, and P2P are also pretty much required for the college life.

If you lack the self-control to limit your gaming, you'll just end up finding some other excuse not to do work (drinking, girls etc.). Save your parents the tuition and forget college.

Well, it's not just games; it's being on the internet for too long in general. I actually don't play a lot of games. But yeah, I'm kinda worried about that myself.

I'm not really a party person. In fact, I don't even remember the last time I've gone to a party. And girls? Don't really care about them either.

I'd rather not spend 10+ hours in computer labs each week doing school work.

Computer labs will be full of people, the pcs will be slow, pcs will be dirty/grimey from people touching it all day, you may have to wait your turn, you can't do things in the comfort of your own room, lab might not be 24/7, etc...

And yeah, learn some self control.

I simply quit playing computer games cold turkey when I went to college. I have no interest in PC gaming anymore. However, I will play some consoles every once in a while, but not to the point where I can't manage it.

It's all about self-control. Only remove the PC if you absolutely HAVE to... even then, it's not like you can't go and put it back in your room. Meaning, sure you can get rid of the computer, but you can put it back later or just go play on someone else's PC.

Think about self-control before you remove it.

And, if you need some food or need to use the restroom, you have to pack up everything unless you want to risk getting your stuff stolen.

I remember lab computers....

how there was a long line waiting because everyone needs to turn in a paper...

how the lab closes at 11pm and you're SOL because you didn't bring a computer

how you need to submit a paper by 8am and the lab opens at 9am..

in some ways, computer labs are just as distracting, when you can run into all your friends in there.
