Can we give complaints or ideas here?

Why no integration with Opera like it has with IE? And I'm assuming it's the same with Firefox?

We support Firefox, not Opera, Chrome or other browsers with lower market shares (at least currently). Much of the protection is still there since its done at the network level, but the full browser integration isn't.

How is the uninstall routine? Bloat was only 1 of a few complaints. Any annoyances you guys have seen?

I uninstalled a "trial" version that came with my new Vista Laptop in order to install a purchased "box" version and had no issues. The uninstal was speedy and complete with no files left over that I could find. Please forgive me if the following comment is inappropriate for this forum:
In the Jan 09 issue of Maximum PC (due out in early Nov) they are scheduled to have an antivirus review and showdown. I'll be curious to see their comments.

I currently have SAV 10.2 installed on the system (from university) and is it possible to upgrade to NAV 2009 (like download the trial) and use the subscription provided from the SAV 10.2?

And sorry for bumping old thread.

No SAV is a corporate product, NAV is consumer.

Ditto. Switched to 2008 last year. Very happy.

I do not believe so, 07 and 08 had installer checks, I dont think those were removed for 09. I'll double check with the consumer team tmrw.

Will NAV 2009 protect against malware over the internet, or do I need to purchase NIS 2009? Don't need a firewall or anti-spam, but I need malware scanning and possibly realtime protection against browser exploits, etc.

This is for a friend that I recently had to reformat his computer because he had a bad spyware infection (rootkit). Found it that he was using the internet on his admin account. (Bad idea!)

Doing it on the cheap would be best, BestBuy has NAV 2009 single-user for $25. Cheap enough, so why not. The only question is, is NAV enough, or do I need NIS?

Edit: Also, what kind of activation is on this product? How many times can it be installed (on different machines), and how many times can it be re-installed (on the same machine), and will it eat an activation, if I install it now on xp 32-bit, and re-install it later on on Vista 64-bit, on the same hardware?

See http://www.symantec.com/norton...comparison.jsp?pcid=mp for full details, but yes NAV does include browser exploits.

The usual license you'll find retail is a 3 machine license, so you can install it on upto 3 machines. Reinstalls don't count towards that.

Honestly I'll have to ask, it should not but manual intervention may be required. I'll check.

Ok verified that such an upgrade should not eat a license....

Well, it installed and updated ok. It installed some sort of Norton IPS plugin into Firefox, I have no idea what that does.

I was annoyed that Norton forces you to add a "Norton Account", and during the process, it forces you to create a "Security Question". The questions were so lame (and so limited in number), that I have no doubt that it would be easy to hack someone's account this way.

That's one reason why I'm against requiring a security question. It just provides an additional backdoor to the hacker.

Security is always a tradeoff between ease of use and protection. Would I suggest a security question on my online medical records, probably not. But you have to gauge the value of the target and balance ease of use (its probably not surprising the number of people who forget their passwords for an account they log into possibly just annually)

I just looked and memory usage on my XP sp3 system is under 9 meg I had just looked a few days ago and my neighbors computer has Trend Micro and it was over 60 meg IIRC. there is some benchmarking at a/v comparatives but mostly scanning speed so far.

I'm glad they got it down on memory footprint.. My NOD32 is setting at 7,396K on Vista right now...

Full browser integration, I hope that doesn't mean I get a Norton security bar on the top of my internet window?

Free market research:
The more times I see a product in areas other then it's own taskbar-icon/window, the less likely it is I'll buy it.

Want to back that up? Last time I checked, NOD32 has the best detection/prevention rates in the business, especially for it's footprint. But, thats what writing in assembly will do I guess, highly optimized and small footprint.

If you can link a comparison, I'd love to see it, I'm not partial to NOD32, it has just always blown the competition away.

At least with NIS 2009, and IE7 on Vista, yes, you do get a "norton toolbar" on top of your IE window.

Just installed the trial version of NAV 2009. It seems pretty nice actually. The quibble I have with it is when I tried to run it in safe mode it gave me a warning saying all features might not be available. It does seem to allow a full system scan in SM which is probably the most important thing. The UI seems nice as well.

Which you can, of course, turn off.
