As I mentioned earlier in this thread, Max PC gave the NIS 2009 a "9" "Kick Ass" rating in its Jan issue and no other program tested fared any better in their judgement.

After reading about this in MaximumPC, I picked it up at Frys for $79.99 with $70 worth or rebates to process. I got the 3 license version. I'm please with what I see so far. This is the first time I have ever let a piece of software memorize passwords for me. It still makes me nervous, but I like the Norton Identity Safe feature. I have this on two of my three PCs so far. I'm wondering if the firewall is even doing anything, since I'm accustomed to all of my network using programs coming to a halt until I fiddle with some cascading rules (COMODO).

One feature I would add: make a big red OFF button for the Norton Identity Safe. I want something on my screen somewhere reminding me not to walk away from my computer with Identity Safe turned on. More importantly, I want this for *my wife*. ;)

The $79.99 was for a package deal with NIS 2009, System Works Basic, and Ghost.

Being somewhat less than educated in the dark arts of IT, I want to be clear on a couple of things before I go after the NIS.

First, did I read correctly that my current subscription to NIS will "transfer" if I download the trial version of 09 (and enter the product key)? I have about six months remaining, but, while I don't HAVE to switch now, all this happy talk is tempting me.

Second, I assume I will have to uninstall my current Norton program, so ... What is this I see about earlier versions suffering from an "unclean" uninstall? Is there anything I should know about this process?

Thanks for your time. I'm enjoying reading through this forum, even if I feel to be in a foreign country. (My avatar is a splendid illustration of my level of computer knowledge.)

If you down load the trial version of NIS 2009 it will activate using your 2005 and later key and you will get the remaining time on your subscription. Make sure you get the same version you are presently using ie NAV or NIS as the key will only work with the correct version. If you want you can just install the 2009 product over your existing install and it will find it and remove it as part of the install, or you can download the Norton Removal tool from the Norton site and run it then install. Be aware that the Removal tool removes all! Norton products on your system so if you are using Partition Magic or Ghost you will have to reinstall them. I have tried both ways and saw no difference. You could also Uninstall the old version from the Add/remove menu.

I've been running it for several weeks now and am happy with it. BTW, Newegg was selling the OEM version for just $29 when I bought mine.....who needs documentation?!?

Had used Norton for many years up until 2008 when they strangely decided to remove the ability to tailor parental controls to individual Windows accounts (which forced all users to surf under one set of blocks/filters). I also came to believe (rightly or wrongly) that the Norton uninstalls/reinstalls were responsible for my need to rebuild (because certain MS .NET patches would not install).

Bsobel, I'd be willing to go back to Norton if these "sore points" have been addressed in 2009.

NIS 2009's settings are per user, not machine.

I'm not aware of any issues that would have explained this (or caused this) so I'm a bit stuck as to promsiing it's addressed....

Well, my friend that I purchased and installed NAV 2009 on his machine is having a curious issue.

He claims to be getting popups from Norton Antivirus, something about "1-click support is only available under an Administrative account".

I asked him if he had clicked on support, and he said he hadn't. In fact, he didn't know where it was.

It's happening in his limited user account, and he claims that it is happening, when he launches a different program, his "UltimateBet" client software.

I told him over the phone how to do a screen-shot, so I told him to take a screen-shot next time the pop-up comes up.

I think that UltimateBet uses IE for it's UI. So does NAV 2009, I think. So I wonder what could be going on here.

We do not use IE for our gui.

Well, the consumer version of NAV used to, a few years back. I'm glad to hear that that is the case no longer.

No ideas on that pop-up?

Not off the top of my head, I'll ask the consumer guys tomorrow and see if they have seen this before.

NAV 2009 3-User

$25 at Buy.com, no rebate!

This is a much better deal than the single-user NAV 2009 for $25 at BestBuy (which is probably over by now.)

Edit: Someone tell me why I shouldn't buy this for my computers. :p I haven't run an AV on my computers, mostly ever, but this price is tempting.

Edit: Is there a way to select and de-select what categories of malware are blocked? Specifically, I have a number of so-called "hacktools" on my disk (Norton calls them that), that I use for various things, and I don't really want a rampant AV arbitrarily quarantining useful programs. (Such as Revelation V2, google it).

Or for possibly less $$ from frys.com with rebate. NIS2009 is the way to go.

MSRP for NIS 2009 3-user is NOT $35. In fact I would be interested if you found a place selling it for $35.

Did you even check Frys.com? Here, take a look, 3 user license NIS2009 for $19.99

I bought it for $9.99 from Office Depot.

Anyway, I said the MSRP for NIS was $10 more than the MSRP for NAV.

$70 minus $30 MIR equals $40.

The competitive upgrade MIR requires purchase of a competing product. Thus the price is not $20.

I don't know why you care so much about the price, but read my first response "Or for possibly less $$ from frys.com with rebate", what part of possibly don't you understand?

Just got Norton 2009 Internet Security and all I can say is "good job Norton". They finally got it right, or at least close to it. My last Norton product was Internet Security 2007. That thing was a POS.

My laptop, an HP ze2401xt, keeps prompting me to install Norton Internet Security 2005 when it boots. :p I just hit cancel.
