northern & southern california splitting?

hi,

For those of you who live in california, what do you feel about your northern/southern counterparts? I've heard lots of comments from southern californians that how much northern california sucks and vice versa.

would we be better off if we were 2 seperate states instead?

Not sure if it's even possible. Can a state split? Is there a procedure for that? I thought it would have to leave the union (not possible) and then split, and then both individual states have to join the US.
Also, I doubt the republicans would allow Southern and Northern CA to separate, because then you would have two more democratic senators.

I don't see why it's not possible. I think one part would get shafted in the deal though, it wouldn't be possible to do it completely fairly.

PLEASE! SoCal can keep their smog and democrats. We NorCal folks will happily keep our water. Barren SoCal is a drain on NorCal's natural resources. If they have the economy to keep their half the state running, good for them.

Article IV
Section 3 - New States
New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new States shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress.

The Congress shall have Power to dispose of and make all needful Rules and Regulations respecting the Territory or other Property belonging to the United States; and nothing in this Constitution shall be so construed as to Prejudice any Claims of the United States, or of any particular State.
So there you go. First the CA legislature would have to vote to split. Then the Congress would have to approve it. Which is not going to happen because Congress is Republican and both Northern and Southern CA would be Democrat, and the Republicans would not go for that sort of thing.

I'll be realistic right now. It'll never happen. The two halves are too dependent on each other - SoCal for NorCal's natural resources and NorCal for SoCal's economy. There really is a big division in the cultures from the different halves of the state though. I go to UC Davis right now, and I see the difference between my friends from home (2.5 hrs N of San Francisco) and the LA peeps that I go to school with. Very very different attitudes.

I don't care, they already split a lot of things into two states. Like soccer rankings, Northern California and Southern California are two different states according to the soccer ranking place thingy 🙂

they do have the economy, the entertainment industry alone brings in an awful lot of money. and norcal is probably a lot more liberal than socal. however, you're right, socal does suck up all our water so they can water their stupid desert lawns.

I'm not talking about an immediate split, maybe in the future if democrats control the house of representatives & senate again.

Eh... I haven't really noticed anything specific. All I know is while the demeanor of the students in the same, something's missing from the Davis population. It seems.... washed out... as compared to LA.

The combination of the two, when looked at big-picture, is kind of conformist. On the individual level, there are differences twixt true NorCal folks (and there aren't so many, it's more sparsely populated) and the Socal peoples.

Well here is my experiance having lived in California (Southern that is) for most of my life (born there and stuff) When I was about 23 I moved north up to the Sacremento area. Very nice place, anyhow as soon as I told folks I was from LA they got kinda nasty "LA sucks" and "southern cal sucks" was often heard. I resorted to telling people I was from San Diego as that went over a little better 😛
All was well until they asked "the" question "So, what do people in southern California think about us?" And I had to answer, We dont.

Seriously its so strange that so many people I met had this strange obsesion with southern California, when quite honestly people down south dont really have an opinion on the northern folks.... at all.

Anyhow before I get flamed from the northern Cal folks please note that I dont even live in CA anymore. I was kicked out and deported to Indiana about 7 years back, sumthin about me not being Communist enough.... 🙂 🙂 🙂

Though right about now (11f outside) I would grab a little red book and catch the next plane back if circumstances permited

this ia about as likely to happen as making NYC its own state. when that happens the maybe teh rest of the state couyld get some proper funding

Hmmm I seem to recall some faction from NYC wanting to split off from the rest of NY state once upon a time, lol, we upstaters would have been more than happy to let em suceed from us🙂

what would it achieve really? other than more politicians, a political boundary, and reduction in the efficiency of an economy larger than that of France - what would be the benefit?
