I normally don't agree with you, but I do.

I don't think this particular action will make for an all out war. Obama is too much of a puss to do anything. It seems like China wants to stay away form this as well. Iran will probably pipe in with some empty threats sooner or later.

Once we get a president with some stones in office, then NK will have to be worried.

Congratulations! You just posted the stupidest fucking comment of the thread.

Oh, and Bush had "stones" and he let NK get nuclear weapons. If you knew ANYTHING about this topic, you'd know that the US has very little leverage over NK.

Having your enemy's capitol and most of its economy within artillery range gives you a lot of freedom of action...

It seems like Americans worry about this kind of stuff more than S. Koreans do.

Maybe when South Korea was poor but now they're a highly developed economy and with that the nutrition is much better (average height of males went from 5'6" 30 years ago to nearly 5'10" now). Every South Korean male must serve a mandatory of 2 years in the military which gives them some basic fight training, handle weaponry, exercise and discipline.

From my Korean friends, because of the increase in height, they send the taller, better-looking soldiers to patrol the DMZ in order to intimidate the North Korean soldiers.

That still won't intimidate like the 1000 NK soldiers marching and foot stomping in unison. Scary as hell.

If you guys haven't seen them yet, I highly recommend you check out the NK documentaries on netflix. The last one I saw was National Geographic Inside North Korea...

There are concentration camps scattered throughout the country, some holding about 50,000 people. If you say something as simple as "boy, rations are small this week", you, your parents, and your children go to the labor camps and don't come out. They rape your girls and torture you to death. The people there can't do shit... they live in constant fear.

The Irish Potato Famine killed about 1 million people. Their famine killed THREE million people, and foreign aid was refused. The average kids are like 5 inches shorter than their neighbors in the south, and they're all messed up. 10-yr olds with cataracts, stuff like that.

These documentaries convinced me that NK is one of the Top 3 shitholes on the face of the planet. I had NO idea before now, and was one of the people saying "NK? Ah, who cares what they do..." crowd. The place is a fucking HELLHOLE and needs to be erased.

South Korea needs to begin evacuating the population near the border to the north. Once everyone is out of N.K.'s artillery range, S.K. with the US should launch a large shock and awe military campaign against the north. Our superior technology should flatten the N.K. military within a few days. Reunite Korea and get rid of the insane communist in charge in the north, enough screwing around.

You realize Seoul is completely in range of artillery fire. Of course we should have mapped out the hardened bunkers already so if our shock and awe hits them bunkers successfully, we could knock out a good deal of their artillery that could create massive damage.

With that said, military build up is usually pretty apparent to both sides. As backwards as NK is, they probably could gather enough intel, especially with China and Russia backing them up.

Can that handle 10,000 North Korean Cavalry? :D

guys, we have to stand by our north korean allies: http://thinkprogress.org/2010/11/24/palin-north-korea/

But she can see Russia from her house!!:whiste:

The "old war pig" in me wants to lay waste to all of North Korea...all the way to the Chinese border...Hang Kim Jong Il by his testicles and let the people have their way with him, hand Junior by his neck and let the crows have their way with him...and let the Korean people sort the rest out themselves...BUT, the common sense person that controls the war pig KNOWS that, not only would it be a bad idea to try this, (for a variety of reasons) but also because it just ain't-a-gonna happen.

One of the major lessons we SHOULD have learned from Vietnam is to let the people of a divided nation work it out themselves. Whether it goes the way WE want is immaterial.
WE aren't going to force the NKs to adopt the SK-style of democracy. Not gonna happen, although, I DO believe that if the NK regime were to fall, the entire nation would become a "free and democratic nation" on its own, much like Germany did after the fall of the Berlin Wall and demise of East Germany.

I don't see the Red Chinese wanting this to happen, and I believe they'll back their NK puppets if this escalates into a major shooting war.

what's the difference between our shock and awe and just regular shocker attacks?

While I agree with you on most points, do you think we should have stayed out of Korea in the first place? Without UN involvement I think South Korea would've fallen and the one Korea would be communist. That's not that big a deal though; what would really bother me is the North Korea personality cult running all of Korea instead of just the North. I just don't think Kim Jung Il having control of the entire peninsula could be any better than what we have now.

Think? NK had SK pushed all the way down to the South Eastern tip of the peninsula until the UN and MacArthur pulled a two pronged attack to save their asses.

I'm not really up to date on military history, so I didn't want to be so bold as to claim, "I know."

I haven't read the thread, but I've just got to vent.

Kim Jong Il is emboldening our enemies by demonstrating that he can do whatever he wants and we won't do ANYTHING to make him regret it.

-Continued the nuclear weapons program.
This should have been responded to with an immediate, devastating, unannounced attack. We need to demonstrate that we will not sit around and ALLOW a lunatic like Kim Jong Il to develop nukes. It's shameful that we ever allowed it to get to this point.

-Attacked South Korea.
Again, we should have responded with an IMMEDIATE attack. Make Kim Jong Il feel a nasty sting so he'll think twice before pulling any future bullshit.

Why do people act like it's not a big deal that we didn't stop North Korea from developing a nuke, just because they don't have an ICBM capable of delivering it? Do you REALLY think he's going to fire a missile that can be detected, intercepted, and retaliated against? With all of our spy satellites trained on that country, there's no way they could launch an ICBM without us detecting it.

Put yourself in KJI's shoes. If you had a nuke and you wanted to target your biggest enemy (the USA), would you: A) put it on an ICBM and shoot it over, knowing that the US will retaliate, or B) give it to a terrorist who will deliver it in a way that can't be traced back to North Korea.

I heard some brief summary of Obama saying we need to continue with a diplomatic solution. YOU'RE DEALING WITH A MANIAC DAMMIT!

Show that asshole that we mean business.
