Wow, I didn't even notice it, it's probably not worth the stamp, but I'll be picking one up with the Soyo Case and PS and the Cold Cathode / Fan combo.

Buyer beware!

I went in search of this drive and the 64MB USB Flash
Drive today, and noticed in the ad in the LA Times
that the CDRW was Refurbished. But I didn't find
either in the store, so I can't verify if all are
Refurbs.

Linky to LA Times Ad (Link will only work on Fri, 11/29)

i am almost positive these norcent drives (at least the one I got from best buy 48x12x48) are Acer/BenQ rebadges. That was kind of disappointing to me and all but it was only $9.99. I installed clonecD and the screen that tells you information about the drive it had everything as *YES* which seems to be a good sign in terms of burning w/ safedisc2, etc. YMMV of course. I think I'll go ahead and keep this drive, it'll be a nice upgrade for $10 from my 12/10/32 TDK

How can you tell who manufactures these drives?

On the refurbished issue, the OCRegister ad DOES NOT mention this. Furtheremore, there are no indication from the packaging that this is anything but new. My guess is that the LA Times ad was simply a typo.

it took a little bit of sluthing to figure out. When you boot up, it doesnt say anything about the brand or anything. What I did was I looked into system properties and copied what the name of the drive was. it was something like "ATAPI CD-RW 48x/12" or something similar to that. I put that line in google.com in quotes and it brought up the benq drives. Also, I looked at the specs of the similar benq drive and it matches exactly what was on the label of my norcent one. Hope that helps.

Does anyone have the rebate form from Frys for this drive. They gave me the wrong rebate form. Thanks. I'm also looking for the rebate form for the PNY Geforce4 Ti4200 from Frys. If anyone has either of these forms please post a scan of the form. Thank you.

I bought it on friday. It works fine and looks new. Nero verison is 5.5.8.0

My rebate form shows "RW-400 CD-RW 40x12x40x" don't know why...

I picked up one of these at BestBuy during black friday as it was 59.99 - $20 rebate - $30 rebate for a final price of 9.99 + tax. The drive seemed to work just fine when I tried burning a CD with the included copy of Nero. I made 2 audio CD's and it recognized that my media (which was the cheap stuff, but rated at 40x) as being able to handle 32x, so I set the burn to 32x and the two audio CD's came out perfectly. My old CDRW (Plextor 12/10/32A) has been on the fritz, so, for the price, I'm quite pleased with the drive. I haven't tried anything like CloneCD to see what the drive can or can't copy though.

so whats up with the rebate though?
The rebate refers to RW-400 drive which is a 40x12x40 CDRW
while the drive that Frys sold was RWJ-401 which is a 40x12x48 CDRW.....
Did the salespeople screw this one up?
Im going to frys tommorow to find out.....

i stopped at frys and talked with their rebate representative, they said to use the rebate form you were provided, so I guess its alright. Make copies of everything and keep the newspaper ad just in case...

I simply sent them the ad which showed the SKU matching the product puchased. If you go to their website, Norcent Model: RW400, you will notice:

SPECIFICATION

Model: RW400
Performance: Data rate/write :maximun 6000KB/SEC(40X)
Data rate/re-write:1800KB/sec(12X)
Data rate/read:maximun 7200KB/sec(48X)

Looks like Norcent is simply a rebadger and the current stock did not meet the specifications of that rebate form. Notice how their are differences in Fry's other Black Friday FAR items as well?

My drive does not look like a Benq. In fact it looks like this Lite-On at Newegg. In fact, I received that same package consisting of a Nero CD, one-sheet instructions, and a cable. My only complaint is its slow drive opening. Hopefully, this drive will last more than a year.

I got one also during Fry's black friday sale. I compared the drive to pictures of the lite on version online and it is a direct match. I used Nero info tool to get the firmware version. Then i went Here and compared the firmware to the list and it matches.

The only concern is the rebate. I already sent in the rebate and i didn't notice that the drive reads at 48. I hope the rebate goes though though.

I called up Fry's asking about the rebate, and a CSR was kind enough to fax over the correct rebate - 40x12x48, $39.99. This was the Fry's in Dallas, TX. Their number is (214) 342-5900.

My drive seems to work well - many cd's burned at 40x, no problems.

Sure. Here's the link.

Sorry if the quality is poor, but my legacy fax machine can only do so much!

Those a**holes who are handling the rebates better honor the Fry's-distrubuted forms. My guess is that just about everybody already mailed that Fry's copy. Again, I raise the point that many of those FAR rebates seem to be deliberately incorrect to discourage those vendors from honoring redeption requests.
