So my Chilean Rose Hair (supposedly a female), who has been in my care for over a year and a half, finally decides to molt after I put in a heater. Low and behold, it's a freaking male!! After the molt he has tibial hooks and swollen front feeler/sex organ things. This is pretty annoying as females live a long time (20+ years even) while males don't last long after their mature (ie, develop these tibial hooks and things).

Does anyone know what the heck I can do with a male Chilean Rose hair? I guess I could ask the pet store if the need it for breeding or something, but this is freaking rediculous. Looks like I am going to have to get another one soon as mine won't last long now that he is mature.

So annoying...

Count it as a blessing. Now you don't have to keep a giant spider in your house for two decades.

I have to agree with Tyler on this one.

Cook him over a fire and eat him with mustard. Watch out for the hairs, though. They irritate like fiberglass if they get in your skin.

I am actually a big fan of strange pets. She, er, HE has been a great pet and it's alot of fun to freak people out. My wife has finally gotten used to it so I can't go back now. I will probably get another variety when he dies, maybe a Mexican Red Knee.

Meh, tarantulas are cheap. Just buy a whole bunch of 'lings and most likely you'll get a female. My preference is still the Golden Knees. They get bigger and I think are better looking (for a spider).

Go for an Avicularia - even if it's a male they have some really cool coloring. Red Knees have more irritating hairs than the rose - but they typically don't bother most people.

Cheap? How are they cheap? I assume you mean cheap when you get them as tiny spiders. To get an almost mature tarantula is $30-60 (of the types I want). Thats not real cheap, defintly not "buy a whole bunch" cheap.

I guess I could look at a golden knee, know any good online retailers for them?

Mature spiders are more expensive, but as fast as they grow it's not really an issue. My Golden Knee went from 2" to 5" in a year.

Growth over one year - Golden Knee

I've had excellent luck with Swift's Inverts. Golden Knees are $8 each, and you can get a free one with your order. Overnight shipping is like $20 or so. For the price of a single mature tarantula you could get a bunch of little ones.

I like the Golden Knees because they get 8" or so full grown, have attractive coloring, super-docile temperments, and are easy to care for. Same genus as the Roses, so you should have no surprises with them.

hmmm, I may have to consider that. I am not sure I like the way the golden knee looks, I think the more slender look of the rose hair is appealing. I will check around and do some research. I just wanted to vent my frustration about the whole male thing...

The slenderness is due to the sex of the spider. A male/female Rose will be very similiar in shape to that of a male/female Golden Knee.

Not to mention my spider is fat.
