So on the HDD from my old ass computer that I want to re-use, I had an illegitimate version of Windows 7 and it was tracked so I can't get updates anymore. I want to wipe everything from that HDD and start anew. I have a legit Windows 7 disc now; so I assemble my computer with the parts on post #11, put in my DVD Drive and HDD, insert the Windows 7 disc and in reinstalling Windows 7, it'll just override and everything and wipe the HDD clean?

That would be correct. You do not want to do this now of course, but if it was the same version, then you could input the code into your current install. Just search "Activate Windows" BUT, if you're going to have a new Mobo coming you won't want to do that.

@David - Maybe I'll learn a little and become the new David! Muahahha.

Haha, well, I know I was the first person to reply to Muskie's first thread, and he's catching up to me in posts lol. So go for it. I'm hardly the most knowledgeable person here. I learn new things every day and it's a (mostly) friendly community. You are more than welcome! 🙂

My favorite part there is the caveat "mostly." Haha. Got any infamous trolls or something?

Mostly just heated debates about i7 vs. i5 and SLI/ CrossfireX vs single card. There are also some fanboys with no sense about them. I wouldn't say it's something you wouldn't run into on any other forum. It's just that nowhere is "perfect" ya know?

CROSSFIREX IS BETTER CUZ IT HAS THE WORD FIRE IN IT!!!!!

See, I can play! 😛 Haha.

So how was your first build experience? I'm kinda nervous. Spending quite a bit of moolah, wondering if I'll fit everything together successfully, if I can setup everything sucessfully, etc. As a college student who needs to save money, I hope this investment pays off for me aesthetically. Haha.

I would recommend having someone with you. I actually had friends do it and I watched. If not to help you, to just kinda talk with you and keep you mellow. Dealing with a $300 processor and not being able to bend the pins and the like can be nerve racking. It should just be like putting lego blocks together.

Also remember to have the motherboard manual handy. This might be exclusive to AMD, but the first time I built a computer on my own without help, I didn't hook up the power button/ HDD leds/ ect. correctly and it wouldn't turn on. Not that it was a big deal, but it scared me none the less.

Just keep your cool and you'll be fine. I'd give the motherboard manual a thorough reading before you put anything together.

They are cards that have been scarce. The 6870 only launched ... umm... 2 weeks ago? Anyways, they are high in demand and low on quantity...

Well I hope they recontinue by Friday. If not, I should probably just go with the 460gtx 1gig. Or go with the SAPPHIRE model of it? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102909

It's more expensive 🙁

So if I can't find anyone to be with me in person, I should have someone on the phone? I should link up a 4 way conversation with all you guys! Haha, jk jk.

Edit: Or maybe I'll go with one of my first options http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...D=3332167&SID=

But some online assholes say the 6850 is better. WHY MUST OPTIONS CONFUSE MMEEEE! Haha.

Sapphire is a good brand as well. As long as you aren't spending above normal for it, go for it.

$255 plus $8 shipping...about 15 bucks more and no free shipping. But the extra money instead of a gtx460 might be worth it in the long run. And a free HDMI cable...that's nice.

There's also the choice of the 460 1GB FTW edition which is pretty much the same speed as the 6870, but a little louder and a little cheaper.

Well if the other 6870s aren't in stock, then I'll possibly go with this. FTW > the other 460gtx Cyclone, because I'm assuming it's an overclocked version.

Also, I'm not sure a 6870 can fit in the motherboard I have chosen in post #11. But it's probably just me freaking out.

So do any of you guys plan on updating your systems anytime soon?

Basically the 460 FTW edition is overclocked enough to be about equal to the 6870. Either would fit just fine in the GA-P55-USB3.

I might get 12GB DDR3, then an SSD down the road a bit when the 25nm stuff comes out. other than that I have an up to date rig.

Holy shit, what are you doing that requires so much RAM? NASA hacker? Jesus-mode gaming?

And when you plan on updating to the SSD, how do you transfer your operating system to it from your original HDD, so your computer boots up super fast? (If you run it along your original HDD drive, I'd assume both still work independently.) I hope this makes sense.

@Mfenn - I guess a lot of options offer similar qualities at the cost of some minor "cons." (I really don't care how loud my computer is. I wonder why people always nag on this; unless I've never encountered what a Jet Engine computer sounds like)

Edit: Just saw this - http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.514101

Not bad...

"Super fast boot" with SSD is best obtained with a fresh install. So that all is optimised for the SSD blocks.

Heh, tell me that after you've lived with one for 6 months. Been there, done that, never going back.

OCZ RAM ("low-voltage" apparently means 1.65V to OCZ, lawlz), Thermaltake PSU, and i7 870 pretty much kills that deal.

Ahh, I see i7 and assume it's the one that beats the i5 760; scrub mistake...I should pay more attention. 😛

And I usually play loud music while on the computer; it should drown it out 😛

I work in 3D art and a lot of high res multi-layer textures in Photoshop. I do play the occasional game as well, and I'm sure no game will complain about 12GB RAM lol. I also like to run a lot of programs open at once.

Well, the i7 870 does beat the i5 760; it just isn't worth the extra money.

Oh my Mohammad, that's just overkill haha 😛 You should design a game that needs a computer like yours...just sayin'.

Why do 1600 over 1333 for RAM? THAT big of a difference?

No noticeable difference in end-user performance. Bigger numbers sell 😉
The higher-rated memory can come in handy for overclockers, when the overclock setting don't allow a slower memory speed.
