what does he do for a living? Different types of nerds use completely different sets of acronyms. For instance, it's reasonable to find a switch engineer who couldn't tell you about FSMO roles. Vice versa, a microsoft engineer could, understandably, become confused when discussing MPLS. Find out what his job entails and then read up on the whitepapers put out by the vendors in his field. Like, if he's a systems admin, you could read stuff from novell, if he's an engineer, stuff from cisco is always good for late night conversation.

then again, maybe he's just trying to impress you, in which case you should feign being ever-so awed by his vocabulary and offer to defragment his hard drive until he walks funny. in the case he's a linux geek, offer to let him check your filesystem.
