Noob builder seeking advice

Spending a bit of extra on your total system cost is definitely worth it, don't cheap out now 😉 Your system specs are great, you'll have a rig that will overclock like a cheetah 😀 A PSU is just the last piece of the puzzle..........

To be honest, I'm not an expert on PSUs. For $75, there are a number of recommendations for Hiper, Rosewill, and Fortron (FSP). Maybe search through the forums here looking for recommendations for that price range, post your list and see what people think

Sorry I can't help more on the PSU.....I'm more knowledgeable on the more expensive models.....I'm not sure which ones are good on more of a tighter budget. 🙁
 
Ive searched around a bit and all I have figured out is buy a reputable brand and something that has all proper hookups. Any recommendations for these specs:

Antec PSUs are supposed to be notorious when it comes to DoAs. I followed the anandtech guide for mid-range conroe builds and got the FSP Group (Fortron Source) FSP550-80GLC-R ATX 2.01/EPS12V 4 SATA 2 PCI Express 550W Power Supply. It is a bit expensive, but it works perfectly. The rosewill PSUs have reasonable ratings in newegg. But I think you should stay away from Antec.
 
Thanks for the opinion. Im pretty settled on my HD. Dont need anything special and I have external HD for any overflow storage need. Easy upgrade later when I have the extra cash.
 
I think you recommended a 400W PSU. Most graphic cards these days require atleast 450W for a single graphic card and 550W for SLI/Crossfire. I am assuming the graphic card that he has chosen falls into these categories. Also a higher rated PSU will be useful for future upgrades. For examples the PSU requirements for X1950 pro can be found in the link below:

The one I mentioned has more than enough power for any card except an 8800GTX unless he happens to get many more hard drives.
 
My intention was not to say it was insufficient. All i wanted to convey was the fact that a better supply will always come good in the future when he plans to upgrade to better power hungry components.
 
Ill be honest the reason I went a different direction then your choice was I wanted to order most everything from Newegg. Paying shipping at some of these places for one item can be a bit expensive. I trust your opinion and will take a look at how much shipping would actually be. Also someone (maybe ill informed) told me that 500W was the smart thing to do with the upgrade ability and overclocking ability.

No I do not. If i did believe that was the case why shouldn't I have suggested a 700W PSU and stop with 550/500? You do get reasonable 700W PSUs for ~+/-70 bucks.
