The S3 has PC2 6400 RAM capability. If you get the S3, you can use that saving to get a nice aftermarket CPU heatsink 😉

Im a tool.... Good call on the S3....

I could use help picking out a case/power supply/cooling rig... Any suggestions?
Just trying to stay on budget..

He doesn't need that much power.

Any other fans that I would need to buy or will the 120mm exhaust be enough?
An exhaust fan will be enough.

I don't know why this isn't getting attention. This is what you need to do. I might recommend the X1950XT 256MB and an Artic Cooler Pro 7 so you can get friendly with a little OC on the E6300 to 2.8 GHz to get your feet in the water.

I've been leeching a lot of ideas from this thread (among others) for a new system that I'm putting together. Rather than start another 'new rig' thread, figured i'd just piggy back this one.

Any and all feedback is appreciated. Not my first machine, but definately my most aggresive ($$) undertaking. I've never OC'ed before, but plan on doing so with this machine. I think my biggest concerns are MB/RAM compatibility (have browsed a lot of forums and haven't seen any obvious problems) and whether the PSU is adequate for this system.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4GHz
GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 Socket T (LGA 775) Intel P965 Express ATX
CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
SAPPHIRE 100186L Radeon X1950XT 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16
ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro
CORSAIR HX520w ATX12V v2.2 and EPS12V 2.91 520W Power Supply

I have a case, HDD, DVDRW, CDRW, sound, etc..

Any other glaring ommissions?

No omissions, just a question: Any chance of upgrading that vid card in the not-too-distant future for DX10? Just asking cuz you might wanna look at the 620W version of the Corsair PSU.

Oh, and the Rev.2 of the DS3 mobo is coming soon, so dunno when you're planning on ordering your stuff.

Other than that, NICE SPECS!

Newegg is selling DS3 for 130 and S3 for 125 now..I got DS3 on black-friday for 130..is S3 90 bucks on any website now?

Okay after reading up a bit on overclocking it is definitely something I am interested in doing. What hardware do I need to change for easiest overclocking. I have read that stock cooling with this processor has been fine in all but extreme oc'ing...true?

Also which power supply is best for easy installation with all proper hookups for me being a novice builder. And will I need any different wattage? What do you all recommend for my system?

thanks!

Great specs for overclocking. An aftermarket CPU cooler isn't necessary, but for the $40 it's definitely worth it.

What PSU you going with?

Agreed, DS3 suppsodly is more durable but eh, the only way mobos break in my experience is if they are cheap garbage, or if you are just stupid and mishandle them, so for all intents and purposes S3 and DS3 are the same thing.

Not sure about PSU. What specs do you reccomend in a PSU? I have heard stick with a well known brand for quality reasons. I also want to make sure I have all necessary plugs that ill need for my hardware...

haha actually I just copy pasted that system specs from previous post without updating that I did decide on S3...
I like the cooler... now just for a PSU...

Thing about the PSU is that you want something good, but not too expensive. But you should also get something that will handle an upgrade to a DX10 vid card, it's not like a PSU for that will cost double. So really it depends on your budget. A GOOD 600watt PSU should do you just fine for a few years. And trust me, an extra $30 to get a better PSU is a VERY GOOD investment. Don't bother spending hundreds and hundreds of dollars on a system and then try to save $30 on the PSU, that's insane. About how much $$ you got left for PSU?

OH, and are you in Canada or US?
