Just closed schools here in Newnan, GA/Coweta County.

Sound like they are closed for 2 weeks but I imagine they will extend that if things have only gotten worse.
University System of GA just let their hammer fall. Canceling classes for the next two weeks. Setting distant-learning and testing it in the third week. And then resuming in an online-only fashion. Wife called and let me know (she's a Chem teacher). I checked GA State, Univ of GA and Georgia Tech and confirmed.

I'm actually feeling a bit sick in my throat and sinuses since yesterday. Not severe enough for me to describe as "sore" and it's not in my lungs yet. Probably nothing major but I will monitor (of course).
But based on the date of that flight, I believe it's been well over 14 days earlier than yesterday. That would say you didn't contract covid-19 on that flight.

There are cases of much longer incubation periods.

Drunk people are willing to stand closer together.

yeah, but it's the whole "bars can remain open until 10pm, because suddenly that's when people become drunk and irresponsible and should go home" part of the inference here. :D

I know alot of us on AT are tech people, so this is of interest. Our company (health insurance company no less) got our first coronavirus phishing attempt today. Im in security so know quite a bit about these, but the attempt was VERY good. It appeared to come from Cigna, and stated "you are now covered for coronavirus. Please log in to see your new benefits) The english was perfect, no obvious "Nigerian" phrases or improper use of words. We distributed it to the entire company as an example to keep vigilant.

think I saw one of these earlier (corona scam) disguised with AWS service for some reason...friend got it, didn't really look at it myself. But the details were pretty spot on, I'm just not sure what the premise was.

While I agree we should try to close as much mass gathering places as possible...

What are people's thoughts economically? Anyone working those events are going to be broke. Restaurants will have no one attending and many will fall.

Even if a restaurant does try to stay open and do something like home delivery of food - they are going to have a nightmare trying to get all the supplies and food that they need in order to make the meals.

I'm just sayin' - this all sounds good on paper, but I honestly don't think we can pull it off....

this is exactly what government is for. These are the reasons we save money. We need short bursts of capital to sustain civilization-killing events (human history has long been subjected to such events--we fucking know it happens--and this is the sole purpose of democracy, to sustain our way of life indefinitely, as equitably as possible). It is why public trust is absolutely essential. We couldn't collectively accept the nature of our system without a decent civic, literate appreciation of why we even have a country. ...why anyone has a country these days.

this is a good idea, assuming the stewards of such understand this, and don't squander the nation's capital for power, short-sightedness, and actual personal, criminal reasons. .....but I wouldn't know anything about that.

Well, the one we got was for Cigna. There was a button to click here to see your policy update, whereby a user would enter their Cigna credentials. So, the attempt was made for that end.

Funny it was sent to a competitor lol

I dont care for many of Trump's proposals, but his idea of halting payroll taxes I think is appropriate for this very reason.

OK OK I KNOW NOT POLITICAL!!!!

eh, the point is how do you sustain people in the industries that won't actually have jobs, very suddenly.

not sure how payroll tax givebacks are going to help the suddenly unemployed, which is the specific question there.

But maybe I am confused, lol.

I mean, if it's the quickest way to get cash back to people, I agree; but I'm not sure how that helps those unemployed via this market collapse.

No I get it. Unfortunately this country is so populous there is no one size fits all. It sucks for those in the service industry like the guy who sells hotdogs and beer at games.

lol. I agreed with you too, there on the next comment--though I'm not sure how it works for the unemployed. :D

strange days. :beermug:
Well, political forums especially, we focus on the trees and not the forest. As Americans I honestly believe in the big picture we want the same things. We have more in common than not. The differences of course is how to achieve those things.

Anyway beermug indeed.

Awwww how cute, you guys should get married! Zinfamous & blackangst sittin' in a tree. K-I-S-S-I-N-G.

Just kidding. My philosophy is this as far as politics: We all secretly agree on the end conclusion (outcome), we are just at disagreeance on how to get there. We can honestly do it if we try hard enough ;)

It'll still smear out the ICU load more than if we just continue going to work/having social gatherings. Everyone's mindset should really be 'become an introvert for a month'.

Impossible. I can’t even stop touching my face or ears.

Has anyone that got the virus and recovered gotten it again?

You know, this is all astounding. To think, this major shock and threat to our species seems to be due to the permutation of probably a couple virus spores. Saw it, probably in this thread, that it probably is the result of a animal borne coronavirus spore entering a host cell (animal or human) that was already infected with an endemic human coronavirus spore. Together, they formed a genetic amalgam resulting in this new coronavirus that infects humans but much differently than the other endemic virus that gave rise to it. All this in a single animal cell event and it's exploding now around the planet.

I've made the decision to start wearing the N95 mask when I'm outside in public around people. And I'm only around people when I go to the grocery stores now so I will be wearing mask there. I don't care if people look at me funny. They can think that I'm weird or that I must have the virus. But I bought the mask in preparation for this reason, and I think it's now time.

I think masks are very important in order to defeat the spread of the coronavirus. I think it's essential tool to fight this. China and South Korea are the only two countries that defeated this deadly virus and in both countries, the public all wore masks religiously. I think the government in the US and around the world are making a big mistake not encouraging everyone to wear masks.

I'm also cutting out all restaurant dining. So no fast food or restaurant food until this virus dies down. Everything will be cooked at home.

I'm seeing more N95 masks. I have them. Haven't been wearing them but guess I should. I was in Costco today and a woman about 3-4 feet from me coughed grossly, semi into her elbow while giving me the strangest look. I stopped breathing until I was a good 10 feet past her. It might have been too late, was my thinking.

I like my odds of surviving covid-19, actually, still the experience is apt to be at least as nasty as the average respiratory illness, and I don't normally get over them in a couple of days. I often suffer post nasal drip for months after one.

It's in my small town north of denver now. All the schools and gatherings closed and canceled for at least 2 weeks. Our local hospitals maybe have 150 beds between them. Time to break out the masks. And we are implementing hand washing as the first order when returning and daily sanitizing of outside things at home.

While the death numbers are alarming, I think noone is gathering data on near deaths or serious/critical cases. I had a bug about 2 or 3 years ago that totally fucked my lungs and sinus for at least a year. I was only able to clear it up after getting prescription nose spray and using it for months. to this day im still not 100%.

Yes. It can happen from reassortmenr (two viruses infecting the same cell) or mutation. The pressures it might find spreading between cells in a new host can also accelerate mutation.

A person can sometimes get an animal version through abnormal exposure, like the people who butchered chickens and got Bird Flu when it could not spread person to person. Though people were only occasionally getting it from direct contact with birds or similarly abnormal contact with people, the death rate was extremely concerning. China was so worried that it would mutate or recombine to spread freely from person to person that they killed hundreds of millions of domestic birds (mostly chickens IIRC).

HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS... CULLED.

A virus mutates more readily in a new host even without reassortment so the risk was extremely high either way.

Mark Cuban is trying to help the workers who have lost their income because of the cancelled NBA games...
