SARS killed over half the people 65-years-old and older that contracted it. The 65-and-older population in China alone is around 150 million. It's not difficult to see how this coronavirus could kill far more people than the flu.

Few alternatives available....full hazmat suit or become an absolute hermit. I don't recommend the hazmat suit....I spent 1.5 hours in one, getting to play in it during a summer, running up and down hills. Wasn't the most pleasant experience I'd ever had.

Or you can just carry on with life.

Yes, and it wouldn't be surprising if the elderly contributed to 71-85% of the coronavirus deaths in China.

But the important statistic isn't what percent of the dead are elderly, but instead what percent of the elderly infected die. A regular flu might kill 1% of the elderly infected, while SARS killed over 50%, making it 50x more lethal to the infected elderly than a regular flu. The mortality rate of this coronavirus could easily be a magnitude higher (10x) than the regular flu, and that is what makes it so dangerous given how easily it can be spread.
