In this case, the media is actually reporting on the consensus of medical professionals.

Not just giving everyone worst case scenarios.

But I guess you can't understand nuance?
Then why don't you trust the consensus of medical professionals on the potential threat of this virus? How is that different than the consensus that buying face masks off Amazon may not actually be necessary?

I'm still annoyed with myself that I didn't anticipate and profit off of the hilarious run on Iodine pills after Fukushima, especially because I was living in Berzerkely at the time. :D

I did. I had the real stuff too. Sold $7 worth for $40. The Anandtech FS thread got locked though. :(

...and in the very same article they misattributed the run on masks to Americans when we already knew the majority were straw buyers for China. I also bought a pack of two masks the moment I was made aware of those Chinese sites showing others in China how to order from American suppliers like Amazon... but I didn't go buy them all out or anything like the Chinese buyers are.

Sorry, but that CNN article just can't be taken seriously when they didn't even know this.

I do. And the consensus of medical professionals is actually the Flu is a bigger, more immediate threat and Americans should be more concerned with the flu and get their flu shots than worry about the Corona Virus.

I posted that.

But OK.

You also posted that people shouldn't worry about this, regardless of the fact that from an epidemiological perspective, it's potentially more dangerous than influenza.

If you're wondering why I'm crawling up your ass about this, it's the above. It's potentially more dangerous than the flu, and therefore some precautionary measures are warranted. Calling people out for taking precautions doesn't make things better, it makes things worse to stroke your own ego.

Couldn't find the locked Anandtech FS thread but I did find this one I posted on another forum:

Obviously, I was less concerned with it than I was the profit potential or else I would have kept them. ;)

Impossiblw when it's still being assessed internationally. All signs are that it's WORSE than China's doctors will admit, and China has a history of fudging the numbers. IOW: so much for "consensus."

Sigh...

Did you get your flu shot?

If the answer is no, and you're worried about the Corona Virus, your risk assessment is drastically skewed.

That is not my opinion, that is the consensus of epidemiologists in the US. Many of them are using the Corona Virus outbreak to remind people the flu is far deadlier, kills more people every year than any corona virus ever has and actually has a protective measure in place most people don;t take advantage of.

You can crawl all you want.

Found a better exchange in the "Nuclear Plume heading to Socal arrives on Friday" AT thread:

All ATOTers in cali please wrap yourselves in tinfoil for your morning commute. Pics a must.
ATOTNUKEPILLS.JPG

I ran out of tin foil making those RFID/NFC-blocking wallets to keep people from wirelessly stealing my credit card numbers. :( At least I have this gas mask!
Nice chop, but the shadows on the cup and gas mask are way off.

My mother actually made those wallet things but I was playing into the joke by pretending to be that prepper type who over-reacts. ;)

I borrowed the gas mask from a DJ friend (wanna-be Daft Punk) just for the shot... which I also used in my Craigslist ad.

Are N95 Masks Really Effective against the flu?
A little online research will reveal that the flu virus is .17 microns in size. Clearly smaller than even N100 masks can filter out. However, it is critical to understand that the flu virus does not float in the air by itself. The flu virus is transported from patient to patient on droplets of excretions from sneezing and coughing. These particles are typically 5 microns or larger. When a sick patient wears a respirator, the respirator can be very effective at preventing infectious material from leaving the patients body, and when worn by healthy individuals, it prevents inhalation of said material. More importantly, wearing a mask is a excellent way of preventing the user from rubbing or touching their mouth or nose, which is a very high risk factor. At the end of the day will an N95 mask guarantee to protect you from the Flu? No. But it can substantially reduce your risk or receiving or transmitting the disease.

We lose a lot of people to sharks too...don't forget sharks!

Corona virus has only been brewing a month....It's new and scary, but better with a slice of lime. (I think vitamin C is the difference).

Yes. There's a rather large chance of larger numbers dying to this, it's worth being cognizant of.
It sucks if you are in China. Wear mask, wash hands before touching face will help reduce the risk. Buying masks in NA is a bit nutty.

Maybe, unless you're like me and you work at a place with thousands of Chinese students wandering around. I cannot confirm how many may or may not have been in Wuhan recently, interacted with someone from there, or interacted with someone that was infected by someone from there.

Bear in mind we're only a few hours of flying away from the epicenter, and the initial lockdowns were well into the incubation period.

I'll buy you plane ticket to China if you promise to go and report what's going on in China near Wuhan. Don't bother taking any mask since you don't believe in this or not freak out by it. 100% serious offer.

You are on West Coat right? Again you wash your hands before touching your face and chances are you are fine. Almost all the Chinese students would wear a mask, wear one if you want.

It's fucking amazing how our skin keeps us safe.

East coast. And yes, chances are I'm fine. Having said that, it doesn't mean you don't pay attention to what's happening, and be aware that based on statistics, this virus has the potential to be Very Bad.

At no point have I said that we need to go all doomsday and hide in our bunkers, just that it's not fruitcake nutty to start thinking about whether or not you should be taking precautions about it 'just because it's in China'.

... Are you in China? I am not so I am not that worried. We do have two cases here, one is confirmed and recovering the other presumed, awaiting test. We are in a much better position than during SARS.

I am talking about the retards that freak out while not being in China.

I am East Coast as well and have adopted handwash before touching face protocol.

Nope, not in China. But I'm keeping up with this because it can affect me financially. I did stock up on box of disposable masks because that's cheap insurance. Masks won't go bad and I can always use it later on if I need it.

Theres an ongoing coronavirus outbreak in the middle east, theres an ongoing Ebola outbreak in west Africa...
Theres pretty much always an outbreak with the potential to be globally serious.

Theres an outbreak of arguing-about-life-outside-of-moms-basement-with-other-nerds. Infection rate is very high and mortality rate is nearly 100%, since there is no cure.
