You know I just realized that my daily commute on the bus is me being surrounded by dozens of Chinese students and post-docs, now returning from their break back home.

Think I'm fuct. I might need to walk in the freezing weather for the next month or two. It's uphill, too. gahh....
I feel your pain, I swear there's ten thousand Chinese students on-campus where I work. So many doorknobs. So many shared breaths.

Early signs of infected outside of China is that this virus isn't as serious as SARS/MERS and it's mutating rapidly to weaker form. And incubation period is only like 4 days or so and not 14 days as feared. So things are sounding better although things are still going to get lot worse in China as far as reported cases. Hopefully news will keep getting better.

Score points for the car culture. I work in the middle of DFW but can easily go all day without coming within 10 ft of another person. Mass transit superbugs will be the death of us all.

This story kind of makes me sick....I mean, not with the virus, but in general.
Was wondering how SerpentZA and C-Milk's friends would escape this. Perhaps they couldn't. :( Would've been easy for the Chinese government to check the messages of anyone these two worked with unless they had taken certain privacy measures that are also considered illegal in China.

That'll reduce the effectiveness of your immune system (the reason people think cold makes you sick). Yep: definitely "fuct." I already picked out the perfect urn...

...I was going to link to a dildo urn but then I thought better of it. ;)

Can those 3M N95 dust masks really offer adequate protection from the Coronavirus? When I'm working with spray paint, lacquer thinner, or any other chemicals, I use my respirator; the smell of any of those goes right through an N95 mask. I've even started using my respirator when woodworking due to the very small dust particles I don't want to be breathing in through the N95 mask.

IM(slightly-uneducated)O, you need an actual, well-fitting respirator with the pink organic vapor cartridges if you want protection from a virus, as well as eye protection.

all eyes have so far focused on a seafood market in Wuhan, China, as the origin of the outbreak. But a description of the first clinical cases published in The Lancet on Friday challenges that hypothesis.

The paper, written by a large group of Chinese researchers from several institutions, offers details about the first 41 hospitalized patients who had confirmed infections with what has been dubbed 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV). In the earliest case, the patient became ill on 1 December 2019 and had no reported link to the seafood market, the authors report. “No epidemiological link was found between the first patient and later cases,” they state. Their data also show that, in total, 13 of the 41 cases had no link to the marketplace. “That’s a big number, 13, with no link,” says Daniel Lucey, an infectious disease specialist at Georgetown University.

its not about filtering out a single virus in the air. its about filtering out a droplet of shit coughed out by someone else with lots of viruses in it.

Because you're using wrong mask for spray paint. If you're working with spray paint and any oil/chemicals, you wan't P95 mask, not N95.

Stop. Buying. Masks.

It's useless and stupid.

This whole hysteria is pointless.

There's been a run of surgical masks in the US because of the coronavirus scare. You don't need them, physicians say

I thought we weren't supposed to believe mainstream media right now? Or should we only believe them when they agree with your view of current events?

This is fear mongering and all the usual media suspects are jumping on the bandwagon.

There's a run on them in the USA because people in China who DO need them are getting them through US channels. They've literally set up websites to instruct each other on how to order them from US Amazon and other places. Of course there isn't an imminent reason for Americans to run out and get them right now, but the diverted supply could potentially make things difficult or impossible if we end up needing them for the same reason in the near future. That means there are two reasons to get them while you can:
Scalping AKA sending supply where it is most demanded
Hoarding AKA prepping to secure them for yourself just in case

Nothing wrong with having a couple in your tool chest since they'll be useful for something at some point in the future (hoarder mentality about everything... I know).

I'm still annoyed with myself that I didn't anticipate and profit off of the hilarious run on Iodine pills after Fukushima, especially because I was living in Berzerkely at the time. :D

In this case, the media is actually reporting on the consensus of medical professionals.

Not just giving everyone worst case scenarios.

But I guess you can't understand nuance?
